Brissett is in line to compete with newcomer Drake Maye for the Patriots' starting QB job ahead of the upcoming NFL season, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Given that New England selected Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it's only a matter of time before the North Carolina product is installed as the team's starter. That said, it's possible that the rookie begins the season as Brissett's understudy, with coach Jerod Mayo noting Thursday of the Patriots' signal-caller situation that "at the end of the day, our philosophy is the best players will play. We will compete and the best player will start." Brissett rejoined the franchise that drafted him in 2016 on a reported one-year, $8 million deal, providing New England with an experienced option who can either helm the offense until Maye is deemed ready to do so, or alternatively serve as quality backup and mentor to Maye, who doesn't turn 22 until Aug. 30. Meanwhile, 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke are also on hand to provide the Patriots with QB depth ahead of training camp.

Brissett has agreed to terms on a one-year, $8 million contract with New England, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
It remains to be seen what the Patriots choose to do with their No. 3 selection in this year's draft, but Brissett is now the No. 1 option under center with New England one day removed from dealing Mac Jones to the Jaguars. The journeyman quarterback started his career with the Pats in 2016 and actually started two games in place of a suspended Tom Brady. He then spent his next four seasons with the Colts, both as a backup and starter before subsequently spending one year each with the Dolphins, Browns and Commanders. If the team does decide to draft a quarterback, Brissett still could start while the team develops someone behind him or use him as a top-tier backup option.

Brissett (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
EDGE Analysis
After a hamstring injury prevented him from making his first start of the season in the Commanders' Week 17 loss to the 49ers, Brissett looked as though he would be ready to suit up for the regular-season finale versus Dallas, albeit in the backup role he's handled throughout the campaign. Despite closing the week with a pair of full practices and avoiding a designation for Sunday's contest, Brissett will end up on the inactive list for the second week in a row. Jake Fromm will suit up as the No. 2 quarterback behind Sam Howell, while Brissett's time in Washington could be over. He's scheduled for free agency this offseason after he completed 18 of 23 pass attempts for 224 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions across his three relief appearances in 2023.

Brissett (hamstring) was a full practice participant Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
With a full practice under his belt, Brissett looks to be in the clear to play in the season finale versus the Cowboys this weekend after a hamstring injury prevented him from making what would have been his first start of the season Week 17 versus the 49ers. After Brissett was made inactive for that contest, Sam Howell stepped in to make his 16th start of the season and will continue to direct the offense in Sunday's finale, even though the former is seemingly healthy enough to play. Though he'll close out the 2023 campaign without having made a start, Brissett could still draw consideration for a starting job as he heads to the open market this offseason. After an impressive showing as a fill-in starter in Cleveland in 2022 before Deshaun Watson returned from suspension, Brissett continued to excel over his three relief appearances behind Howell in 2023, completing 18 of 23 pass attempts for 224 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 19 yards on three carries.

Brissett (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Though he was initially named the Commanders' starting quarterback for Week 17, Brissett was ultimately inactive for Sunday's 27-10 loss to the 49ers due to the hamstring injury he suffered in practice last Thursday. While the fact that Brissett is practicing in some capacity to kick off Week 18 prep is a positive sign, he'll be stuck in a backup role if he's cleared to play in this Sunday's season finale versus the Cowboys. Head coach Ron Rivera has already announced that Sam Howell will retain starting duties for Week 18.

Brissett (hamstring) is inactive for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
EDGE Analysis
On Wednesday, head coach Ron Rivera named Brissett the Commanders' starting quarterback for Week 17 after the veteran signal-caller replaced Sam Howell for the second game in a row last weekend and nearly led Washington to a come-from-behind victory in an eventual 30-28 loss to the Jets. Unfortunately for Brissett, he'll have to wait until at least Week 18 against the Cowboys to make his first start, as he told the team Thursday that he was dealing with tightness in his hamstring and was then a limited participant in Friday's practice before carrying a questionable tag into the weekend. Brissett didn't show enough improvement in a pregame workout to give it a go Sunday, so he'll be inactive as the emergency third quarterback while Howell sticks as the Commanders' starter and newly signed Jake Fromm serves as the No. 2 signal-caller.

Brissett (hamstring) isn't slated to play Sunday versus the 49ers, but the Commanders will put him through a pregame workout to determine his availability, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
On Wednesday, coach Ron Rivera made a change at quarterback from Sam Howell to Brissett, but Brissett reported tightness in his hamstring to the team Thursday and ended Week 17 prep with a limited practice Friday and a questionable designation ahead of Sunday's contest. Brissett thus will be subject to on-field work in order to get a sense of his ability to handle the rigors of game action, with his status becoming known when Washington posts its inactives about 90 minutes before a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. If Brissett isn't able to go, Howell will retake the reins of the offense.

Brissett (hamstring) is trending toward being a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Per Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site, Brissett, who had been named the team's Week 17 starting QB on Wednesday, was added to the injury report Friday as questionable after dealing with hamstring tightness. If Brissett is unavailable for Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET contest, Sam Howell will step back in as Washington's starter.

Brissett was a limited practice participant Friday due to a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports that Brissett informed coaches of his hamstring tightness after team meetings Thursday. The QB got treatment Friday morning and still managed to practice in a limited capacity, but there's now some doubt about his ascension to the starting role, which was announced by coach Ron Rivera on Wednesday. If Brissett ends up unable to play ahead of the Commanders' 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, fellow quarterback Sam Howell will make his 16th start of the season.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Brissett will start Sunday's game against the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
After coming on to replace the struggling Sam Howell in the third quarter of this past Sunday, Brissett came close to leading Washington to a comeback win before the Commanders ultimately fell to the Jets, 30-28. He made enough of an impression in relief to replace Howell as the team's starting quarterback, with Brissett completing 10 of 13 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. With only two games left in the regular season, Brissett will presumably start Week 18 against the Cowboys, provided he acquits himself well enough versus San Francisco.
