IDP CHUTES AND LADDERS: The Linebacker M*A*S*H Ward fantasysharks.com Fri 8/24/12 7:00 AM

We're into the third week of the NFL preseason, and if there's been one predominant storyline in IDP circles during training camps and the exhibition season, it's the injuries that have played havoc with the linebacker position across the National Football League. Beginning with the hamstring injury that ended Green Bay Packers' inside linebacker Desmond Bishop's season and continuing through the broken foot suffered by inside linebacker Pat Angerer of the Indianapolis Colts to the injuries that felled two of the New Orleans Saints three starters. In the span of a day, no fewer than four linebackers who began the summer among my Top 20 at the position have suffered maladies that have caused a seismic shift in my rankings. With fantasy draft season in high gear and live drafts galore taking place in the next week or so here's a look at some of the players who have either climbed up or slid down my rankings of late due to the rash of injuries that have hit the linebacker position. UP THE LADDER D.J. Smith, Green Bay Packers: No linebacker has gotten a bigger IDP boost over the past month than D.J. Smith of the Packers, who steps into the starting lineup after Desmond Bishop's injury. Smith has shown the ability to be a productive fantasy asset in the past, including racking up 27 total tackles in three starts for Bishop last year. With Smith set to slide into an every-down role the 23-year old becomes a viable low-end fantasy LB2 for the 2012 season that can potentially be had for pennies on the dollar if your league mates aren't familiar with his situation. Phillip Wheeler, Oakland Raiders: The Oakland Raiders traded for Aaron Curry last year in the hopes that he could fill their hole at weak side linebacker, but the way things are going right now the former fourth overall pick is going to be as big a bust in Northern California as he was in the Emerald City. A balky knee has kept Curry off the field and the Raiders are reportedly rapidly losing patience with him, which has opened the door for strong side linebacker Phillip Wheeler to move into a three-down role for the Raiders. Granted, the 27-year-old doesn't possess a ton of fantasy upside, but he did rack up 84 tackles for the Indianapolis Colts last year and is available late in IDP drafts or on many waiver wires, making him worth a look as depth or an injury replacement in deeper leagues. Jerrell Freeman, Indianapolis Colts: After finishing fourth in the NFL in tackles last year, Pat Angerer ...

Paint It BROWN fantasysharks.com Thu 7/19/12 9:06 AM

You know about the Johnsons (Calvin, Andre and Chris), but have you considered the Browns? Yes, draft days are coming - "I see a red door and I want to paint it brown" - Antonio Brown, that is, and Donald Brown. It's not so much that I love their last name, it's more that I love their average draft positions. We all look for that guy between Rounds 5-9, where most drafts are won, that produces more like someone from Rounds 2-4. And after the first five rounds, I'm willing to gamble a bit. How will you paint it? In most mocks, expert and live, Antonio Brown is being selected after Round 5, and sometimes as late as Round 7, an average draft position of Round 6. But the thing is Antonio could easily be a Top 10 wide receiver, if not better. He quietly broke 1,100 yards last season. He also had 41 rushing yards with an average of 5.9 yards per carry, and that's not counting his return yards. Bonus, he occasionally returns and runs the ball - that especially helps if your league counts returns yards, as one of mine does; a very sneaky way to gain yards, which equal points. In 2010, Antonio took one to the house for 89 yards. In 2011 he was the first player in NFL history to have more than 1,000 yards receiving and 1,000 return yards in the same year. This year, he claims he'll keep returning punts and kickoffs. Oh, and did I mention Ben Roethlisberger, the guy who throws Brown the ball, played injured most of 2011 and thus not to form for a good part of the season? OK, so you are concerned about his touchdown production. I am too, a little, but let us not overreact. With the retirement of Hines Ward, a wide receiver who has done more than his share of end zone dances. Add some of those to Brown. Nice. Not to mention, the Pittsburgh Steelers' new pass-happy offensive coordinator, Todd Haley, as well as a few newly drafted offensive linemen to help Roethlisberger do his thing. All should add up to Antonio Brown being a steal in Round 5 or later. Then there is the other Brown, Donald Brown. I know, I know. He plays for the Indianapolis Colts. But, do not be so quick to forget he showed some ability and was reasonably consistent when given the chance last season. And with Joseph Addai sharing the backfield with Brown in 2011, he wasn't given much of a chance - that is my point. The guy has only started 11 games in three years. He surprised us all when on 16 carries against Tennessee, he ran for 161 yards and a touchdown. And against Carolina when he ran ...

Don't be "That Guy" fantasysharks.com Mon 5/28/12 8:15 AM

Now I know you've experienced this before. That annoying coworker that eats your last donut, that nerdishly energetic friend-of-a-friend who thinks he's the life of the party, the donkus who robs a gas station and leaves his ID on the counter. Many a moron qualifies as "that guy." I almost feel like "that guy" by even bringing up "that guy." "Hey man, don't be ‘that guy'... deedeeedeee." When it comes to fantasy football, you DO NOT want to be "that guy." Most of us in the fantasy football community, including veterans, newbies, heroes and homers, get this. However, every year beginning as early as draft day, "that guy" rears his ugly head and leaves us scratching ours. Sometimes tragic, sometimes serendipitous, yet always hilarious, someone at your fantasy football draft will defy all logic and the very fabric of the universe and take "Mr. Hold Out for a New Contract" or that older player who has had more reconstructive surgery than Robocop. Ask the jokester who took Chris Johnson with his first pick or Peyton Manning with, well, any pick. This quick guide to avoiding mystifyingly stupid decisions can help you ace your draft without being remembered as "that guy" who took Michael Vick with the first overall pick (Mathew Berry). Classic Drafting with "that guy" "That guy" is always targeting someone he has a man crush on and is not afraid to spend a top pick to get him. Sometimes there are issues with "that guy's" computer connection, he forgot the draft date altogether or he blew it off for a Kiss reunion concert and has his little brother drafting for him, again all of which is vintage "that guy." The most telling "that guy" move is the reach. It's splendidly uncouth how this reach move is either for an unproven rookie or a geriatric injury-riddled fading star. That guy in my league last year took Julio Jones in the third round and went on to take Hines Ward with his very next pick. Here is a list of players "that guy" is eyeing in the first few rounds of this year's draft. Robert Griffin III Justin Blackmon Peyton Manning Steven Jackson Randy Moss Aaron Hernandez (because "that other guy" took Rob Gronkowski with the sixth overall pick) Look for Value One of the trademarks of "that guy" is reaching for a rotten apple when low hanging fruit is right in his/her face. As I will talk strategy later, the most important thing is finding value. Jimmy Graham was an awesome value in the eighth round last year, but not worth a third-round...
