GM Dave Gettleman expects Manning to retain the Giants' starting job QB in 2019, ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan reports. "The goal is for Eli to be our quarterback," Gettleman said. "Maybe we're going to be the Green Bay model, where [Aaron] Rodgers sat for three years. Who knows?"
EDGE Analysis
The Giants could've freed up $17 million in cap space if they'd released Manning before March 18, but they instead kept him on the roster and then drafted Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall Thursday night. While he's still a strong favorite for the Week 1 start, Manning probably won't keep the job for long if he struggles or the team falls out of playoff contention. Given the current state of the New York defense, it's hard to see how the team can remain competitive with anything less than a Herculean effort from star running back Saquon Barkley.

GM Dave Gettleman confirmed Manning will receive a $5 million roster bonus Monday, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
EDGE Analysis
Previous reports suggested the bonus was due Saturday, but it turns out Manning has to wait until Monday afternoon. Regardless, the decision to pay him the money ensures the Giants will stick with the 38-year-old quarterback for at least one more season. Gettleman's offseason moves hint at a run-first approach centered around Saquon Barkley, with the Giants acquiring standout guard Kevin Zeitler and swapping out Odell Beckham for Golden Tate at wide receiver. The problem with the plan is that it requires a solid defense, while the Giants arguably have the NFL's ugliest depth chart on that side of the ball. A wealth of draft capital should help address the problem, but there will still be some busy days ahead for Manning, who could eventually face pressure for the starting job if his team uses an early pick on a quarterback.

The Giants are expected to retain Manning for 2019, ESPN.com's Dan Graziano reports.
EDGE Analysis
Trading away Odell Beckham might seem to hint at a rebuild, but the Giants apparently believe they can compete in 2019 with an offense built around Saquon Barkley and the running game. A final decision on Manning should be clear by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, at which point he'll receive a $5 million bonus if he's still on the roster. Given the current state of their defense and wideout corps, it's hard to understand why the Giants believe a past-his-prime, 38-year-old quarterback is more valuable than the $17 million in cap space his release would create.

General manager Dave Gettleman doesn't sound entirely committed to retaining Manning for 2019, NJ.com's Matt Lombardo reports. "You don't know what can happen," Gettleman said Wednesday. "We're evaluating everything and we just have to keep moving forward."
EDGE Analysis
Gettleman spoke with the media less than an hour after coach Pat Shurmur, who said Manning will be back with the Giants in 2019. It sounds like the two bosses aren't quite on the same page, though both were complimentary of Manning's 2018 performance, pointing to subpar play on the offensive line as an explanation for the 38-year-old's inconsistent performance. With Gettleman refusing to rule out the possibility of adding another veteran quarterback, the Giants are staying open to all options at the position, including the use of an early draft pick. The team surely plans to make a decision on Manning before March 17, at which point he's due to receive a $5 million roster bonus.

Coach Pat Shurmur said Manning will stay with the Giants for 2019, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shurmur strongly hinted at another season with Manning as the starting quarterback, even noting that he believes the 38-year-old has multiple years remaining in his career. This doesn't mean the Giants will pass on the opportunity to select a QB early in the 2019 NFL Draft, but it does suggest Manning will be under center for Week 1. Shurmur implied that a poor offensive line was largely to blame for the team's struggles on offense in 2018. With Saquon Barkley, Odell Beckham, Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram all under contract, the Giants have no shortage of talent at the skill positions.

Manning finished the year with passable cosmetic stats - 4,299 yards, 7.5 YPA, 21 passing TDs and 11 picks - but a look under the hood tells a different story.
EDGE Analysis
Manning took 47 sacks (10th) for 358 yards (6th), despite rushing for only 20 yards and fumbled seven times. In other words, he got nailed for huge losses like many scrambling QBs do without making up for it with positive gains. He also managed only 21 TDs (24th) on 576 attempts (10th), despite having Odell Beckham, Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram and Saquon Barkley on his team. The Giants could save $17 million in cap space if they cut him before June 1, but as of now, the team hasn't indicated whether it plans to bring Manning back.

Manning completed 24 of 41 pass attempts for 301 yards, two touchdowns and one interception during Sunday's 36-35 loss to the Cowboys. He also lost a fumble.
EDGE Analysis
Manning completed just 59 percent of his attempts, but some big plays allowed him to top 300 passing yards for the fifth time this season. He connected with Evan Engram and Cody Latimer for touchdowns, upping his total to 21 on the season. Unfortunately, Manning also turned the ball over 15 times and failed to take full advantage of the wealth of options at the skill positions that the Giants boast. This ineptitude could force the team to move on from Manning during the offseason, whether it be in free agency or via the draft.

Coach Pat Shurmur called Manning the Giants' starting quarterback for Week 17 against the Cowboys, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Consequently, Shurmur squashed speculation about whether 2018 fourth-round pick Kyle Lauletta will earn a start in his first pro season. When asked whether Lauletta will see game action for the second time this season, Shurmur replied, "We'll see." Shurmur's decision is not a surprise, considering Manning is on the doorstep of 4,000 yards for the fourth time in five seasons and is posting his best yards per attempt (7.5) since 2011. On the other hand, the Giants are out of postseason contention, so it wouldn't surprise if Manning's backup makes an appearance Sunday, whether it be Lauletta or Alex Tanney.

Manning completed 25 of 33 passing attempts for 309 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Sunday's 28-27 loss to the Colts. He also rushed twice for no yards and another touchdown.
EDGE Analysis
Manning found Scott Simonson for a three-yard touchdown to help the Giants jump out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. While he wouldn't pass for another score, he would add one on the ground in the third, but in the end, it would not be enough for the victory. The 37-year-old may have played his final game for New York as there has been speculation that he would be replaced by rookie Kyle Lauletta for the final week of the regular season at home against Dallas prior to being released in the offseason.

Manning will get the start Week 16 in Indianapolis, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
EDGE Analysis
Coach Pat Shurmur didn't wait long to kill any speculation about Kyle Lauletta getting the Week 16 start now that the Giants have been eliminated from playoff contention. There is some chance the rookie could take snaps as a mid-game replacement, especially if Manning struggles early against a red-hot Colts defense. Shurmur didn't comment on the plan for Week 17.
