The Best of the Undrafted - NFC Edition fantasysharks.com Fri 7/26/13 9:06 AM

Following up on Part I, where we took a look at undrafted AFC players that you will want to keep an eye on, today, we move on to the NFC. NFC NORTH Chicago Bears -- WR Marquess Wilson -- This is one to just keep in the back of your mind as he will not be a starter, and if Alshon Jeffery and Earl Bennett stay healthy, he may not even see significant playing time. In the NFL however, those are big "ifs." People get hurt. In this case if either one of those receivers get hurt, Wilson appears to be next in line. At 6-foot-3, he has the vertical skills to go up over defensive backs. He did come into the league on the skinny side, but, according to reports out of camp, he has already put on some weight and is still working on that as we speak. This is a tall, fast receiver who should be good, if not a star, in this league someday. If something happens that affords him the opportunity to get playing time this season, you could get a great steal off the waiver wire with this kid. Detroit Lions -- WR Nate Burleson -- Really, should I have to convince you of this? Burleson has proven that he can play in this league. In 2011 when not injured and playing all 16 games, he put up more than 70 receptions and 700 yards. Burleson is not injured. Burleson plays opposite of, possibly, the best receiver ever, (all due respect Jerry Rice). The Lions did not find any sort of quality replacement. He will be available on most waiver wires after the draft. You will most likely have a failure or two on your roster. Again, should I have to convince you of this? Green Bay Packers -- RB Johnathan Franklin -- This is a back that I know is good. He knows he is good. He will probably be good in the NFL. He just happened to get drafted on the same team behind Eddie Lacy. He is powerful, can accelerate quickly and he runs angry. He also runs low to the ground and has some scouts comparing him to backs such as Ray Rice. He has much potential, but because of Lacy, is being completely overlooked. He may not get very much playing time this year. He may not get much playing time beyond that unless he gets traded, but just like a few of the people on this list, he is only a trade or an injury away from fulfilling his potential. This is definitely a player to keep on your radar. If you notice any movement in front of him whatsoever, be ready to pounce. Minnesota Vikings -- WR Jarius Wright -- In a points-per-reception league Wright could prove to be an incredible commodity this ...

Week 11: The Quarterback Shuffle fantasysharks.com Thu 11/17/11 9:06 AM10 Comments

What a weekend for quarterbacks. If you happen to compete in multiple fantasy football leagues, odds are one of your quarterbacks either suffered an injury or his role may be threatened. Let's start with Michael Vick. The struggling Philadelphia Eagles hit another roadblock with a loss to the Arizona Cardinals along with their star QB breaking a "couple" of ribs. The Houston Texans continued steamrolling as they pounded Tampa Bay, but appear to have sacrificed Matt Schaub for the season in the process as he suffered a significant foot injury. Matt Cassel injured his hand and underwent surgery this week, which will put the remainder of his season in jeopardy. Although less serious, Matthew Stafford has a fractured right index finger, which he is not blaming for his poor performance against Chicago. Ben Roethlisberger broke his right thumb in the win against Cincinnati and must be thankful for his bye during Week 11 to recover. In Washington, Coach Shanahan pulled another "switcheroo" by deciding to start Rex Grossman over John Beck. If you are starting a Washington Redskins' quarterback in your league, I would suggest looking for any other option, literally ANY other option. The Arizona Cardinals' John Skelton has not been great, but is making waves while Kevin Kolb recovers from injury. Monitor this situation closely if you are a Kolb owner in case Skelton threatens the starting gig. With all of the quarterback injuries and uncertainty of Week 10, Tim Tebow improved his starting win-loss record to 3-1 with a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs despite completing a mere two passes! Take a dive with me as look for solutions at quarterback and other positions to guide you to victory in Week 11. QB Alex Smith- If your quarterback is either on a bye or injured for Week 11, you could do much worse than Alex Smith. Smith will not post Aaron Rodgers' or Drew Brees' numbers, but he also will not hurt you. He has thrown for at least 200 yards and a score in back-to-back games against the solid defenses of the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. With an attractive matchup against the Arizona Cardinals who rank 24th in passing yards allowed per game, Smith should enjoy another productive start, especially if Frank Gore is limited or sidelined. Week 11 Projection: 200 passing yards and 2 TDs RB Michael Bush- Oakland Raiders' backup running back Michael Bush always seems to answer when opportunity knocks. With McFadden sidelined Bush has ...

Waiver Wire Wonders fantasysharks.com Tue 11/15/11 3:06 PM1 Comment

We're back to our regular format this week as we tier up the potential waiver wire candidates for this week. A slight deviation as we dump the lowest category and introduce a "Quarterback Discussion" section. With so many going down this week, a discussion of the potential replacements seems appropriate. This week's column was written while wondering what the point spread might be if Green Bay played against Indianapolis. I'm thinking in the 30 range, and even then, would anyone touch the Colts? Should be it higher? After a full slate of games last week, we've got some more byes to get past in week eleven. On to this week's waiver wire wonders.... Smokin' Hot RB Lance Ball, Denver To say that the Broncos' passing game is non-existent is giving it too much credit, and yet they continue to find ways to win games. Knowshon Moreno has been ruled out this week, and while reports are that Willis McGahee will be available this week, expect Ball to once again command a heavy load. He responded to being the only healthy option last week by carrying the ball 30 times for just under a hundred yards. With or without McGahee, Ball will be very much involved this week and his number will be called early and often. WR Vincent Brown, San Diego The rookie has performed very well the past couple of weeks, putting up 79 and 97 yards, respectively. He narrowly missed a second touchdown this week, settling for the single score. With Malcom Floyd's status still unknown, Brown has impressed and has earned himself some playing time even if Floyd returns. Only owned in 17% of online leagues, Brown is a short-term start as well as a long-term fantasy producer. WR Earl Bennett, Chicago We mentioned Bennett in this space last week, and his ownership shot up to 59% of online leagues. Six catches for 81 yards this past week confirms his standing as the top wideout in Chicago. He is a solid WR2 fantasy starter, and won't be flying under the fantasy radar for long. Consistency will be his name, expect 5-7 catches and 75-95 yards on a weekly basis. Solid Pickups Jacksonville Defense at Cle, vs Tex, vs SD, vs TB, at Atl, at Ten, vs Ind In general, if you can find a defense on the waiver wire that is playing the Colts or Browns, you grab and play them. If you are looking to settle on a defense for the rest of the season, consider the Jaguars. Sure, they bulked up against Indianapolis this past week, but they have been solid all season prior to that game. They've posted 21 sacks to...

Corner Lockdown: Covering Week 10 fantasysharks.com Sat 11/12/11 12:31 PM

Running Wild You can never really trust a Mike Shanahan backfield, but it's starting to look like Roy Helu may have a lock on the starting running back spot in Washington, for now. Ryan Torain has fallen out of good graces with the coaching staff so it could be Helu's show now. Helu is coming off a very intriguing Week 9 where he only rushed 10 times for 41 yards, but had 14 catches for 105 yards. Fourteen receptions in one game for any player is incredible, let alone a running back, so Helu will definitely be a hot play come Sunday. He is going up against a solid run defense in Miami, but the pass defense is very soft. I see him contributing very similar to last week's effort. It's almost a certainty that Helu won't crack 14 receptions again, but look for him to get around 20 touches. This kind of workload out of a running back is plenty reason to get him in your starting lineups for Week 10. It looks like the New York Jets are finally back to their ground-and-pound ways and this bodes very well for Shonn Greene and his fantasy owners. In his last four games, Greene has received a total of 81 carries and has run for 345 yards. He doesn't offer you much in the receiving area, but getting 20 carries a week is very solid for a running back these days. Take advantage of that and keep him in your lineup. The Jets have done a great job in the last month of spreading the ball around and opening up running lanes, so he should continue to have success as the season progresses. Greene gets the slumping New England Patriots this weekend that just cut nose guard Albert Haynesworth, so there should be some holes to run through. The offensive line is getting stronger and stronger and this only adds to the notion that Greene is a must start in fantasy every week. A few weeks into the season it appeared that Daniel Thomas was going to be the premier running back for Miami, but a nagging hamstring injury has forced him to play sparingly over the last month. With that, Reggie Bush has taken full advantage. Bush is averaging close to 18 touches a game the last two weeks and is coming off his best performance of the year in Week 9 where he ran for 92 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 50 yards. Perhaps the most impressive stat of all for Bush is that he has been getting seven yards per carry during this two game span and 4.9 yards per carry for the season. Thomas has practiced fully this week, but Bush will still be starting for the Dolphins against ...

Waiver Wire Wonders fantasysharks.com Tue 11/8/11 7:15 PM

A trio of players top this week's list of players to target on the waiver wire. All are players that can contribute as fantasy starters right away. Well, let's clarify and mention that one of them is a running back for Washington, so that carries some automatic question marks about the long-term value. This week's list was put together while wondering why the NFL can't simply have the teams that are on a bye week play each other the following week. Doing so would eliminate any advantage one team might have, and while we're at it, why don't we have it be division games so the rivalry can have a couple of weeks to build up the hype?! And what about having the teams that are playing Thursday be on the bye the week prior? I know, makes too much sense. A single list again this week, though we'd like to point out that the Top 3 on this list are head and shoulders above the others that are in this week's story. On to this week's waiver wire wonders ... WR Laurent Robinson, Dallas We talked about Robinson in this space last week, and since he's still only owned in 35 percent of online leagues, he makes a repeat appearance. Reports out of Dallas are that Miles Austin will be out for 2-4 weeks, and that opens up a spot in the starting lineup for Robinson. Tony Romo has already shown a likeness for him, as Robinson has caught five passes and a touchdown in each of the last two games. He's worth owning in all leagues and worth considering in your starting lineup as a WR2/WR3. RB Roy Helu, Washington Here we go again with the Redskins, coach Mike Shanahan, and a running back. Last week's running back-du-jour in Washington was Helu, and he didn't disappoint, going for nearly 150 yards in total offense, including 14 catches out of the backfield. He was on the field for nearly every offensive play, and Shanahan is at least saying that he'll ride Helu as long as he can. Though many will shy away from Helu due to past performance of Shanahan backs, Helu is worth owning and starting in all formats. At least until Shanny changes his mind. WR Earl Bennett, Chicago After finally getting clearance to play, Bennett didn't waste any time becoming Jay Cutler's favorite target on Monday night in Philadelphia. He caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, with Cutler looking to him on almost every third down passing play. The Bears offense has been crying out for a go-to guy in the passing game, and a healthy Bennett appears to be that player. He should...
