Head coach Jay Gruden said of the safety situation, "You start with Duke and Donte is going to play a lot. It might depend on the package. It might be more nickel for Donte, it might be more base for Duke, or what have you. That's something that we'll decide on a week-to-week basis and a game-to-game basis depending on who we're playing." Look for Whitner to see a similar snap count this weekend against the Lions.

He'll likely be the backup to Duke Ihenacho and Will Blackmon, but Whitner could still start to see snaps right away.

With as much productivity he had during his 2015-16 campaign, it's a bit of a surprise the Browns aren't keeping the 30-year-old around. Expect Whitner to sign on with another squad, but his IDP fantasy value may take a hit.

Whitner may have been able to flirt with last season's team-leading total, but he missed two games earlier in the year due to a concussion. He broke a streak of recording an interception in five straight seasons, but still managed a career-best sack total, as the Browns seemingly had to get more creative with their pass rush scheme. At 30 years old, he'll have several more seasons under contract to cement his legacy in the league, though his year's as a productive IDP option may be dwindling.

Whitner, who has missed two straight games, is thus set to resume his strong safety duties in tandem with free safety Tashaun Gipson, a bit of good news for the Browns' secondary, with cornerback Joe Haden ruled out Monday.
