Though the Jets could use the depth at cornerback, it's not surprising they they will part ways with Patterson, who was recently suspended by the team after he skipped the Jets' third preseason game and the team's subsequent practice two days later.

The Jets suspended Patterson for the remainder of the preseason, NFL.com's Chris Wesseling reports. The team imposed the suspension after Patterson failed to show up for the team's preseason game last Friday due to his unhappiness with his place on the Jets' depth chart. His suspension will be lifted Sept. 1, but there's still a chance the Jets could cut him if they don't believe he's committed to the team.

Patterson's unhappiness with the Jets' current pecking order at cornerback is thought to be a reason behind him not showing up for Friday's preseason game, the New York Daily News reports. Patterson went missing without communication from the Jets' organization for 48 hours over the weekend, including their third preseason game Friday. That unexcused behavior caused the Jets to suspend Patterson indefinitely on Monday. Despite ankle, calf, and quad injuries limiting Patterson throughout the preseason thus far, the Jets believe their newly-signed cornerback is disappointed with his positioning on the team's depth chart. If that feeling is true, Patterson certainly took an unconventional route to express such a sentiment. Nonetheless, the Jets could use Patterson's help at cornerback, since Dee Milliner (ankle), Antonio Allen (concussion), and Dexter McDougle (knee) are all presently sidelined.

Patterson will be suspended indefinitely by the Jets, while the team gathers more information regarding his unexcused absence over the weekend. This was the expectation after the Jets signed Patterson in April, but was confirmed after they declined to address their cornerback need in the draft. Patterson's primary home will be the slot, which he'll man in nickel situations.

The extent of the operation is uncertain, but Patterson should be ready for training camp. He's tentatively expected to fill a top-three corner role for Gang Green in 2014.
