Longtime Giants T/G David Diehl announced his retirement from football. Diehl is only 33 years old, but this move was expected after his on-field play declined precipitously the past few seasons. A 2003 fifth-round pick out of Illinois, Diehl spent his entire 11-year career as a Giant, amassing 161 starts with one Pro Bowl appearance (2009). Diehl hangs 'em up with two Super Bowl rings and an impressive track record of versatility. He made over 25 NFL starts at every offensive line position except center.

The Newark Star-Ledger expects Giants G/T David Diehl to announce his retirement "in the coming weeks." Diehl is set to become a free agent and isn't expected to be re-signed by the Giants. The 33-year-old doesn't want to play for any other team. He started 11 games this past season and has spent his entire 11-year career with the Giants, winning two Super Bowls and going to one Pro Bowl. Diehl's body has betrayed him in recent seasons. Justin Pugh is the right tackle for the G-Men.

Impending free agent G/T David Diehl hinted at retirement following Sunday's season-ending win over the Redskins. Diehl, a 33-year-old that has started 161 games for the Giants over the last 11 seasons, is not expected to be re-signed. He said he can't see himself wearing another uniform. "If this is it for me, I can walk away with my head held high and not look back without any regrets," he said. "I've accomplished more than anybody can dream of." Diehl, who needs thumb surgery, said he'll make a decision in the next two weeks.

The Giants will start David Diehl at right guard in Week 5 against the Eagles. Diehl was active for Week 4, but only as a swing reserve. The Giants' front five will look like this versus Philadelphia: LT William Beatty, LG Kevin Boothe, C Jim Cordle, RG Diehl, and RT Justin Pugh. The Giants also anticipate "a larger role" for FB John Conner as they look to kickstart their running game.

The New York Post reports Giants OL David Diehl (doubtful, thumb) could be active for Sunday's Week 4 game against the Chiefs. Diehl traveled with the team to Kansas City and has received medical clearance on his surgically-repaired right thumb. He won't start if he manages to avoid being inactive, but could be available as an extra offensive lineman.

Giants RT David Diehl insists he's not concerned about his contract situation. Diehl, 32, is due just a $1 million base salary after he was forced to take a massive pay-cut this offseason and is set to become a free agent in 2014. He enters training camp as the favorite to start at right tackle, but could eventually be replaced by first-round pick Justin Pugh. "I'm focused on right now," Diehl said. "I don't need to know what's happening after this season. I feel great"

Giants OL coach Pat Flaherty says the team's right tackle job is incumbent David Diehl's to lose. They're not handing the gig to rookie Justin Pugh. "My right tackle is David Diehl," said Flaherty said. "We have a lot of confidence in David Diehl." The loser of the battle could wind up kicking to left guard, where Kevin Boothe has been a replacement-level starter. Guard might be short-armed Pugh's best spot.

ESPN NFC East blogger Dan Graziano considers David Diehl the "front-runner" to open the season as the Giants' starting right tackle. First-round rookie Justin Pugh will challenge Diehl in training camp and preseason, but the Giants like to ease their youngsters into the lineup. Pugh can also play guard, so he could throw his name in the hat for the starting left guard spot ahead of veteran Kevin Boothe. As it stands now, the Giants' line looks like this: LT Will Beatty, LG Boothe, C David Baas, RG Chris Snee, RT Diehl.
