Retired WR Chris Chambers is eying a return to the NFL. Chambers announced his retirement in June, but has been conditioning for a potential return at an athletic training center he founded in Florida. Unlikely to generate much interest, Chambers, 33, did admit that he will retire if he doesn't latch on with a team this season.

Former Dolphins and Chiefs WR Chris Chambers has retired from football. "I just want to be able to retire a Dolphin," he said. "I don't know what I have to do to get that 1-day contract, but that will be my next goal." Now 33, Chambers tried out for the 49ers last October, but didn't earn an in-season deal. Chambers' career ends after 10 seasons. He made a Pro Bowl in 2005, though that went down as easily Chambers' best ever year. He never cleared 1,000 yards again.

In addition to T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the 49ers are also working out free agent WR Chris Chambers Tuesday. There may be other lesser known names involved in the workout, as the Niners seem intent on adding a receiver. This is the first update we've done for Chambers, 33, since he was released by the Chiefs as soon as the lockout was lifted in late July.

Chiefs released WR Chris Chambers. Chambers was never realistically going to be on the Chiefs' roster. He'll be 33 next month, was owed a $500,000 roster bonus on top of a $2.9 million base salary, and the Chiefs just landed Steve Breaston. With rapidly declining skills, Chambers' NFL future is as a No. 4 or 5 receiver at best. The Chiefs also released DB Jackie Bates.

In addition to a $2.9 million base salary, Chiefs WR Chris Chambers is also due a $500,000 roster bonus once the lockout is lifted. Chambers drew $5.9 million in guarantees last year to catch 22 passes for 213 yards. The Chiefs can cut him this summer without losing a dime. That's exactly what will happen now that first-rounder Jonathan Baldwin is on board to take Chambers' roster spot.
