The Dolphins released Fields on Tuesday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
EDGE Analysis
Fields was a Pro Bowler in 2013 and has been the Dolphins' punter since 2007, but they decided to head into the season with the cheaper and younger Matt Darr serving as their punter. Fields will get a chance to hook on with another team before the season begins.

The Dolphins are planning to released Fields, according to the Miami Herald's Adam Beasley. There is always a chance that a last minute salary reduction could keep Fields in Miami but with the Dolphins looking to save cap space after the monster contract handed Ndamukong Suh, the team is looking to save every penny they can.

Fields will go into the 2015 season in the last year of his contract. Fields had his worst statistical season since 2010 with a average of 46.3 and net average of 38.6. His days as an elite punter may be over.

P Brandon Fields is the only veteran player the Dolphins under contract for the 2015 season. They also have seven current rookies under contract through 2015, including quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Cameron Wake could also be back if the Dolphins pick up his option. But the Dolphins have held off on committing to any players for the long term, and subsequently have a ton of roster flexibility this year and in the future. Miami has $45 million in salary cap space this season.

Dolphins agreed to terms with P Brandon Fields on a four-year, $13 million extension. The deal locks Fields up through 2016, and includes $3.3 million guaranteed. He'll count $1.728 million against the cap this season. A 16-game starter every year since 2007, Fields' net punting average of 41.1 yards was fourth in the NFL in 2011.
