Ex-Colts and Chargers S Bob Sanders attended Broncos training camp Sunday, sitting in the VIP tent and alongside coach John Fox. As far as we know, Sanders never formally retired, though it's hard to imagine him attempting a comeback at age 32. Last we heard from Sanders, he was being placed on injured reserve by San Diego in September of 2011. He generated zero free agent buzz in 2012 or 2013. "Bullet Bob" spent eight years in the NFL.

Chargers placed SS Bob Sanders (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season. "It didn't work out for him or us, and we wish him the very best," said GM A.J. Smith. Sanders, 30, made just two appearances in his short-lived stint with San Diego. Signed to a one-year contract in the offseason, Sanders is an impending free agent and may begin considering retirement. Once a high-impact, Troy Polamalu kind of safety, Sanders' body has broken down.

The Chargers appear to be planning to use SS Bob Sanders on early downs only, replacing him in the nickel package with Steve Gregory. It's an attempt to keep the brittle Sanders fresh. Gregory has played the "nickel safety" role before in San Diego's defense. The rotational approach will cap Sanders' IDP value, costing him big-play potential coming out on passing downs.

The Chargers plan on starting Bob Sanders at strong safety. The terms of Sanders' incentive-laden contract was finalized Tuesday. He'll enter camp as the starter and stick there until he gets hurt. The Chargers are hoping to retain free agent free safety Eric Weddle to play next to Sanders.
