Smith (knee) remains unsigned while rehabbing from a season-ending injury, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith had some success as an occasional big-play threat for the Falcons in 2013 and 2014, but a combination of injuries and age have sapped his explosiveness. Even if he returns to full health at some point this offseason, the 31-year-old may find it tough to catch on with a team that gives him a real shot to earn a roster spot. He had 10 carries for 47 yards and six catches for 77 yards in three games with Tampa Bay last season.

The Buccaneers placed Smith (knee) on injured reserve Monday, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The revolving door at running back in Tampa Bay has been precipitated by a spate of injuries, forcing Charles Sims (knee) and now Smith to IR. As a corresponding move, the Bucs have promoted Russell Hansbrough to the 53-man roster, which boasts three healthy RBs at the moment (also Peyton Barber and Mike James). Elsewhere on the injury front, Jacquizz Rodgers (foot) remained in a walking boot Monday, according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, while Doug Martin has yet to practice since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 2.

Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury Thursday against the Falcons, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Doug Martin and Jacquizz Rodgers currently ailing, the Bucs could promote fellow RB Russell Hansbrough from their practice squad, or alternatively the team could hit the free agent market to add some much-needed backfield depth.

Smith was seen with crutches after suffering a knee injury in Thursday's loss to the Falcons, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith notched 25 yards on five carries, and caught three balls for 27 yards on four targets before injuring his knee late in the fourth quarter. He needed help off the field and was unable to return. The veteran is the latest Buccaneers running back to suffer an injury.

Smith's ability to handle a normal running back workload, which he figures to be in line for in Thursday's game against the Falcons, is unproven, given that he's never had more than four carries in an NFL game, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
While he played 22 snaps in Sunday's loss to the Raiders and carried four times overall, that modest amount of touches actually matched a career high for Smith. It's certainly not common to find a veteran running back of 66 NFL games who's never exceed four rushing attempts in a game, but that's precisely the case with Smith, whose career receiving yards (282) nearly equal what he's tallied on the ground (319). As a result of his history of an abbreviated workload, the 31-year-old could be used more in a Darren Sproles-type role, receiving single-digit carries but being used heavily in the screen game and on short dump-off passes that could replace a traditional running attack at times. James certainly has the speed to eat up large chunks of yards in space, having run a 4.33 40-yard dash coming out of college and a 4.25 back in his high school days.

With Doug Martin still ailing and Jacquizz Rodgers now injured and not expected to play Thursday against the Falcons, Smith figures to see an expanded role in the Bucs' Week 9 backfield, ESPN's Jenna Laine reports.
EDGE Analysis
Also in the mix for the team's carries could be Peyton Barber and even Mike James, with a committee approach a likely outcome. While neither of the three backs is a clear-cut plug and play for Martin/Rodgers, Smith's utility in the passing game figures to keep him involved, in any case, thus making him an option for those scrambling for running back help in a week where six NFL teams are on bye.

Smith gained 16 yards on four rushes and hauled in one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 30-24 overtime loss to the Raiders.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran back got a handful of opportunities when Jacquizz Rodgers left the game late in the fourth quarter with a foot injury, and one of those touches almost cost the Bucs dearly. Smith lost the handle on a rush early in overtime, but Tampa was able to recover it. With head coach Dirk Koetter implying that Rodgers' injury is serious, Smith and backfield mate Peyton Barber could be sharing tailback duties Thursday versus the Falcons unless Doug Martin (hamstring) is able to take the field.

Smith received only one carry in Sunday's 34-17 victory over the NIners, gaining six yards. However, he also secured two of three targets for 41 yards.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran back turned in a solid performance considering his limited opportunities and the fact that he'd just joined the team last Monday. However, Smith's familiarity with head coach Dirk Koetter's offensive system stemming from their three seasons together (2012-14) in Atlanta certainly served to help the acclimation process, allowing the seventh-year pro to contribute in the passing game. Smith's chances for touches in the running game figure to be considerably capped given the performances of Jacquizz Rodgers and Peyton Barber, but he could garner some modest production as a passing-down back. The FSU product came in to Sunday's contest having secured 15 of 18 career targets for 232 yards and three touchdowns, with all of the scores having come in 2014 as a Falcon.

Head coach Dirk Koetter stated he's comfortable with Smith being ready to play as the backup Sunday in San Francisco, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Charles Sims (knee) on injured reserve, only Jacquizz Rodgers and Peyton Barber were available at backup running back for Sunday's game against the 49ers. Consequently, the Bucs signed Smith on Monday to serve as depth. Doug Martin (hamstring) isn't ready to play though, so Rodgers is in line for another start. However, it's now evident Smith, not Barber, will operate as the No. 2 option. Such a role isn't typically conducive to fantasy success, but he could be worth a look in deep formats playing against a San Francisco defense allowing the most rushing yards per game in the league (174.5).

Smith has signed with the Buccaneers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith joins the Buccaneers in wake of fellow running back Charles Sims (knee) was placed on injured reserve last week. After failing to make the Jets' roster following the preseason, Smith will be reunited in Tampa Bay with coach Dirk Koetter, who served as his offensive coordinator with the Falcons from 2012-2014. Although that familiarity should help Smith, his fantasy stock could be restricted by competition with Peyton Barber and Russell Hansbrough for work behind starter Doug Martin (hamstring) and Jacquizz Rodgers.
