Avery has been assigned to minor league camp by the Tigers. He was signed as a depth option on a minor league deal, but with a slew of healthy options available, Avery was deemed expendable. If he remains in the organization, Avery will head to Triple-A Toledo to begin the season.

Avery has failed to live up to expectations as a second-round pick so far in his career, but he did hit .275/.344/.413 with a career-high 10 homers and 31 stolen bases in 120 games at the Triple-A level in 2014 and is just entering his age-25 season. It seems likely he will end up back at Triple-A to begin 2015, but breaking camp with the big club is not completely out of the question for Avery.
