Anthony Swarzak was superb in a spot start Wednesday, holding the Indians to one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three in a 3-1 victory.
Swarzak, who was starting in place of Kyle Gibson (back) hadn't thrown more than 52 pitches in an outing this season, but he was able to get his pitch count up to 74 Wednesday. He lowered his ERA for the year to 4.10 with the fine showing. Swarzak will be unavailable for a few days before likely returning to a long relief role, though it's possible he's earned another start if Gibson doesn't recover as hoped.

Twins avoided arbitration with RHP Anthony Swarzak by agreeing to a one-year, $935,000 contract.
Swarzak, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, can also earn an additional $25,000 if he makes 10 starts. The 28-year-old pitched out of the bullpen exclusively in 2013, posting a 2.91 ERA over 48 appearances.

Anthony Swarzak will be away from the team for the remainder of the weekend as he tends to a family issue.
Swarzak left the team before Friday's contest and is expected to return in time for Monday's game. The 28-year-old righty has pitched well out of the Twins bullpen this season, registering a 3.01 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 68/21 K/BB ratio over 92 2/3 innings.

Swarzak fractured two ribs in January and didn't appear in a Grapefruit League game this spring, but he's ready to return to action after appearing in some minor league contests. He'll work the middle innings for the Twins.

Swarzak was placed on the DL Friday, but since he won't be used in Grapefruit League games, he'll be eligible for activation on April 6. It sounds like he'll have a shot to be ready at that time.

It's his first since he fractured two ribs in an off-field incident with his teammates. "It was good," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He threw the ball over. That was good. He felt great. He said it felt great to be back on the mound again so that was good." Swarzak will begin the year on the DL, but it sounds like he won't miss too much time.
