Sergio Escalona (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Escalona was sidelined for most of camp with what was thought to be a hyperextended elbow, but was told Saturday he had a torn ligament and will have to undergo surgery. The 27-year-old appeared in 49 games last year and went 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA as the Astros' left-handed specialist.

Sergio Escalona will again have his left elbow examined by doctors. Escalona has been nursing elbow soreness throughout camp, and it had seemed like he had turned a corner, but evidently he's still battling the ailment. We'll have to see what the doctor says, but you have to think at this point that his status for the start of the season is up in the air.

Sergio Escalona (elbow) is expected to throw a bullpen session in the next couple of days. Escalona hyperextended his elbow swinging a bat early in camp and has yet to pitch in a game this spring. However, Astros' manager Brad Mills is pleased with his recent progress. The 27-year-old southpaw posted a 2.93 ERA and 25/11 K/BB ratio over 27 2/3 innings last season. If healthy, he should open the year in the Astros' bullpen.

Astros manager Brad Mills said Sergio Escalona (elbow) will probably need at least a couple bullpen sessions before being ready for game action. Escalona has played some catch but has not yet thrown from a mound since hyperextending his elbow while swinging a bat early on in camp. He'll still have plenty of time to get ready for the season. The 27-year-old southpaw posted a 2.93 ERA and 25/11 K/BB ratio over 27 2/3 innings out of the Astros' bullpen last year.
