Diamondbacks signed C Rod Barajas to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. This confirms a report by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Barajas will compete with Wil Nieves this spring to be Miguel Montero's backup and is unlikely to be fantasy relevant in 2013.

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks have made an offer to free agent catcher Rod Barajas. For what it's worth, Sanchez wouldn't be surprised if the D-Backs bring back Wil Nieves as Miguel Montero's backup. Barajas will likely want more playing time, despite hitting just .206/.283/.343 with 11 homers and a .625 OPS this season while throwing out just six percent (6-for-99) of attempted basestealers.

According to John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR in Phoenix, the Diamondbacks have some interest in free agent catcher Rod Barajas. The Diamondbacks would like to use him as a backup to Miguel Montero. Barajas, 37, batted just .206/.283/.343 with 11 homers and a .625 OPS this season while throwing out just six percent (6-for-99) of attempted basestealers. It's unlikely anyone will want him as more than a part-time player at this point.

Pirates declined C Rod Barajas' $3.5 million club option for 2013. There was no buyout attached to the option. Barajas batted just .206/.283/.343 with 11 homers and a .625 OPS this season while throwing out a pathetic six percent (6-for-99) of attempted basestealers. The 37-year-old has expressed interest in returning at a lesser rate.

Rod Barajas said he's willing to take a pay cut in order to remain with the Pirates next season. The Pirates hold a $3.5 million option on the catcher that they seem likely to decline, but Barajas doesn't mind coming back at a lesser rate. "I would like to be back here," Barajas said. "If that means we have to try to figure something out, then absolutely." The 37-year-old is batting just .197 with nine homers and 25 RBI this season.

Rod Barajas went 0-for-3 on Monday and is hitting just .125 in 72 at-bats since the All-Star break. The Pirates knew Barajas wasn't going to hit for average or get on base, but he hasn't supplied his usual power with eight homers and 22 RBI in 252 at-bats. Michael McKenry will continue to get plenty of playing time for the foreseeable future.
