Ciriaco was traded to Miami on Friday in exchange for Erik Jokisch, John Blake of TexasRangers.com reports.

Ciriaco was playing very well this spring and had worked his way into the conversation for a roster spot as a utility infielder, but the Rangers have opted to go with Hanser Alberto for that role. The 30-year-old could make his way back up to the majors at some point if he continues to succeed in the minors, though.

Ciriaco has played his way into the utility infielder competition with a 1.036 OPS through 42 at-bats.

Ciriaco is competing with Hanser Alberto, with Alberto having an advantage of a spot on the 40-man roster, but Texas may ultimately elect to have Alberto play every day at Triple-A Round Rock and have the veteran Ciriaco remain in the majors. Ciriaco signed a minor league deal with the Rangers on Wednesday. The contract includes a spring training invite.

The veteran spent last season with the Braves organization, seeing time in 84 major league contests while appearing in 26 minor league games. Ciriaco hit .261 with 15 RBI and eight doubles for the Braves while playing all over the infield, in addition to making a couple of appearances in the outfield. The 30-year-old will look to make the roster outright in spring training, but he could end up at Triple-A.

Ciriaco was non-tendered by the Braves on Thursday.

The Braves cleared a spot on the 40-man roster and avoid having to negotiate an arbitration deal with the utility infielder. Ciriaco is a career .268/.294/.368 hitter, and he played every infield position other than catcher last season, so his versatility is his main selling point as he now becomes a free agent.

Ciriaco was added to Tuesday's lineup in place of Andrelton Simmons.

The reason for Simmons' removal is not clear, but he was taken out of the lineup just minutes before first pitch, and thus Ciriaco will play shortstop and hit second Monday night.

Ciriaco has played third base just twice this year, but he could see more action there in the near future thanks to the injuries suffered by his fellow infielders. Ciriaco has just seven at-bats on the season, but he has made the most of his opportunities, tallying two doubles, a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Ciriaco had his contract purchased by the Braves on Saturday. Ciriaco will give the Braves some extra depth in the infield following the injury to Chris Johnson (hand). He hasn't been overly impressive thus far at Triple-A Gwinnett, batting .234/.253/.286 with one home runs and seven RBI. The 29-year-old will likely be limited to pinch hitting and spot starts in his time with the club.

Ciriaco will open the year at Triple-A Gwinnett, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Manager Fredi Gonzalez told Ciriaco on Saturday would make the Opening Day roster, but president of baseball operations John Hart pulled a stunner Sunday, trading Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr. to San Diego for Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, two prospects and a draft pick. Quentin was DFA'd, but Maybin took the roster spot that was supposed to go to Ciriaco.
