Taveras passed away Sunday after being involved in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Taveras' agent Brian Mejia confirmed the tragic news Sunday evening. Details regarding the accident are still unclear, but it's a sad day for baseball.

Taveras is out of the Cardinals' lineup again Wednesday. Wednesday's absence will mark Taveras' fourth in the team's last five games. He rattled off six straight starts earlier in the month and went 6-for-18 with a homer over that stretch, but it seems manager Mike Matheny is dead set on riding his veterans, namely Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos, to a postseason birth.

Taveras is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers. Taveras owns a 1.004 OPS in September, but manager Mike Matheny decided to hold him out Tuesday for the third time in four games. Jon Jay will man right field for the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Taveras is out of the Cardinals' lineup again Saturday. Prior to sitting Friday, Taveras had rattled off six straight starts in right field for St. Louis. He'll yield to Randal Grichuk for a second straight day with the Rockies once against starting a left-hander (Franklin Morales), but it looks like Taveras will play regularly against right-handers over the remainder of the season.
