Diamondbacks signed OF/1B Juan Rivera to a minor league contract. It took Rivera a month to find a job after being released by the Yankees. The veteran will go to extended spring training for 7-10 days before heading to Triple-A Reno. He'll be an option for the D'Backs bench eventually.

Yankees released OF-1B Juan Rivera. This opens things up at first base for Lyle Overbay, who will get the majority of starts until Mark Teixeira returns in late May or early June from his wrist injury. Rivera batted .244/.286/.375 with nine home runs and 47 RBI in 109 games last season for the Dodgers.

The Yankees plan to give Juan Rivera a longer look at first base. General manager Brian Cashman said last week that he views Rivera as "more of an outfielder" than a first baseman, but the club is obviously not dismissing the idea of using the 34-year-old at first. Rivera started at first base Sunday and went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Juan Rivera went 3-for-4 and doubled in all three Yankees runs Sunday against the Blue Jays. The Yankees see Rivera as more of a left fielder than a first baseman, which works out OK since both spots are open right now. It'd be a big surprise if he isn't in the starting lineup come Opening Day, and he should have a little value in AL-only leagues early on.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he views Juan Rivera as "more of an outfielder" than a first baseman. "I don't look at him as a first baseman," Cashman said. "I know he played first with the Dodgers, but in fairness, we have to evaluate everything. If I have our people tell me it's a logical, legitimate one to look at, then I'll be comfortable looking at it. I haven't heard that yet and I haven't asked anybody." The comment would seem to indicate that Rivera will mostly see time filling in for Curtis Granderson, rather than Mark Teixeira. Dan Johnson and Kevin Youkilis are the club's main in-house options to fill in at first.

Juan Rivera went 2-for-3 with a double on Friday and is 6-for-13 so far this spring. Rivera has to be considered the favorite to start in left field on Opening Day with Curtis Granderson out of the Yankees lineup. He probably won't be of any use in AL-only leagues for the long haul, but it might be worth a couple of bucks to get his April stats.

Yankees signed OF/1B Juan Rivera to a minor league contract. The deal includes a spring training invite, where he'll compete with the likes of Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler for a gig as a right-handed hitting outfielder. Rivera originally signed by the Yankees back in 1996 and played his first three seasons in the majors with the club. Now 34 years old, he batted just .244/.286/.375 with nine home runs and a .661 OPS in 91 games with the Dodgers last season while splitting time between left field and first base.

Dodgers declined OF/1B Juan Rivera's $4 million club option for 2013. Rivera will receive a $500,000 buyout and test free agency. The 34-year-old batted just .244/.286/.375 with nine home runs, 47 RBI and a .661 OPS in 339 plate appearances this year.

Juan Rivera delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as the Dodgers came back to beat the Cardinals 4-3 on Saturday. Luis Cruz delivered a game-tying double over the head of center fielder Jon Jay with two outs in the ninth. The Dodgers then sent up Rivera to pinch-hit for A.J. Ellis. He hit a looping liner to second that bounced off the glove of a leaping Daniel Descalso, allowing Cruz to score from second. The win moves the Dodgers into a tie with the Cardinals for the second wild card spot at 76-70.

Juan Rivera belted a two-run homer, helping to lead the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Marlins in Miami on Friday. Rivera finished the night 1-for-3 plus a walk. His two-run blast off Mark Buehrle capped off a four-run sixth inning that gave the Dodgers the lead and eventually the game. The veteran outfielder is hitting .247 with six homers and 37 RBI in 78 games.
