Sears took care of business Friday night against a weakened Marlins squad, scattering two singles, a double and a triple in his 95-pitch performance. The 28-year-old lefty also produced his third straight start of six or more strikeouts, lowering his season ERA to 3.89. Sears is scheduled to face the Rangers at home in his next start.

Sears (1-2) took the loss Saturday as the A's were dropped 7-0 by the Orioles, surrendering seven runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out eight.

The lefty looked great the first time through the order, retiring the first nine batters he faced, but Baltimore jumped on Sears for three runs in the fourth inning and back-to-back solo shots by Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle in the fifth, before Gunnar Henderson chased him from the game in the seventh with a two-run blast. Sears did set a new season high in strikeouts and generated 33 called or swinging strikes among his 98 pitches, but he was made to pay when he missed his spots in the strike zone. He'll carry a 4.64 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 24:11 K:BB through 33 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next weekend against the Marlins.

Sears did not factor into the decision, allowing three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings during Monday's 2-0 win over the Yankees. He struck out seven.

Sears was mired in a pitcher's duel with the Yankees' Carlos Rodon and neither blinked leaving each with a tough luck no decision. Despite only throwing first-pitch strikes to 11 of 21 batters, Sears limited the Yankees to four baserunners while striking out more than a batter per inning for the first time this season. After allowing nine runs over 9.1 innings through two starts, Sears has allowed just one run and six hits over his last three starts spanning 17.1 innings. Things won't get easier in his next start, tentatively scheduled over the weekend in Baltimore as he'll look to continue the momentum against a tough O's lineup.

Sears did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out two in five innings.

Sears was effective for a second straight start, but his strikeout numbers remain unimpressive. The 28-year-old struck out 161 batters in 172.1 innings last year but currently sits at a 9:9 K:BB in 20.2 innings through four starts so far this season. He's now allowed just one run over his last 11.1 innings after giving up nine runs in 9.1 innings over his first two starts to open up the year. Sears owns a 4.35 ERA and 1.16 WHIP and lines up to face the Yankees on the road next week.

Sears didn't allow a hit until the seventh frame, when Adolis Garcia knocked a one-out single to left field. While the left-handed hurler did issue three leadoff walks, only one of those batters got past first base. Oakland scored just one run in support of Sears, but it was enough for him to pick up his first win, as the Athletics' bullpen managed to complete the shutout. This was the first good outing of the season for Sears -- he entered the game having allowed nine runs across 9.1 innings over his first two starts.

The 28-year-old was Oakland's most reliable rotation piece last season with a 4.54 ERA in 32 starts, and his fantasy utility will likely be limited in 2024 with wins at a premium, barring a significant improvement in his effectiveness.

Sears allowed two earned runs on five hits over five innings in a Cactus League loss to the Cubs on Thursday. He struck out three without walking anyone but did hit a batter.

The left-hander opened the spring with five scoreless, one-hit innings across his first two Cactus League appearances, and although he's allowed a total of three runs over his next two turns, those have come across eight frames. Even more encouraging is the fact Sears has recorded 13 strikeouts while issuing just one walk, and he appears to be almost built up for the start of the season after his extended time on the mound Thursday.

Sears is incorporating a sinker into his repertoire this spring and enjoyed success with it in his first Cactus League start Tuesday, Steve Stockmar of MLB.com reports. "I've been feeling pretty confident with it. It's a new pitch for me," Sears said. "I've never thrown a sinker. I'm just trying to get educated on it from the other guys that throw it and the catchers and results from the hitters on my team whenever I face them live."

EDGE Analysis

Sears was the picture of stability in an otherwise makeshift Athletics starting rotation last season, logging a team-high 32 starts and posting a 4.54 ERA and 1.26 WHIP that somewhat belied an ugly 5-14 record. The 28-year-old southpaw, who had 70 innings of big-league experience coming into the 2023 season, will be counted on as the No. 2 starter to open the new campaign, and he got his official regular-season prep off to an impressive start against the Guardians on Tuesday with two perfect innings during which he threw only 19 pitches (13 strikes). Sears rolled out the sinker for the first time in live action as well, recording a strikeout and a flyout on two of the three occasions he deployed it.
