The Padres placed Otto on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right teres major strain.
EDGE Analysis
Otto didn't pitch at all in the Cactus League after experiencing problems in his shoulder toward the beginning of camp. He has yet to resume throwing since getting injured, making it likely he spends more than the minimum 15 days on the IL.

Otto (shoulder) had a setback early in spring camp and is expected to open the regular season on the injured list, per MLB.com.
EDGE Analysis
Otto dealt with a shoulder injury last season but was expected to be among the competitors for a rotation spot for San Diego this spring. However, the right-hander suffered a setback early in camp and didn't pitch at all in Cactus League play. Manager Mike Shildt indicated March 9 that Otto is getting closer to playing catch and resuming baseball activity, but even if that happens soon, the hurler won't be ready for game action by the opening of the campaign.

The Padres claimed Otto off waivers from the Rangers on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Otto was DFA'd by Texas on Tuesday after accumulating a 10.13 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through 10.2 innings in the majors. However, he's been solid in Triple-A with a 3.38 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 29.1 frames, so the Padres will take a flier on him as a bullpen depth piece. Ben Gamel was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

The Rangers designated Otto for assignment on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old posted a 10.13 ERA in 10.2 frames for Texas this season and has now lost his spot on the 26-man and 40-man rosters. Otto made 27 starts for the Rangers last season and had a 4.64 ERA, but he's been working out of the bullpen for the big club in 2023.

Otto was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Otto, 27, has been blasted for 10 runs over 8.1 relief innings during his brief time in the majors this season. He and the Rangers will be hoping for better results this time around, and he will give them an arm capable of going multiple frames.

The Rangers optioned Otto to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Otto will cede his spot on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen to right-hander Owen White, who was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. After being activated from the 60-day injured list June 30, Otto made four relief appearances and gave up 10 earned runs on 10 hits and five walks over 8.1 innings.

The Rangers activated Otto (lat) from the 60-day injured list Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Otto has been on the shelf all season with a right lat strain and will now rejoin the Rangers' pitching staff. Otto was great during his rehab assignment, surrendering three runs on six hits while striking out 14 batters across 10 innings. Given the strength of Texas' rotation, it's possible he is now relegated to the Rangers' bullpen, though Texas could also choose to run with a six-man rotation.

Otto (lat) struck out three over three scoreless innings in his second rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Round Rock. He allowed one hit and no walks in the 44-pitch outing.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old has been on the shelf since late in spring training due to the right lat strain, but he's looked strong in both of his first two rehab outings with Round Rock. He's covered three innings in both appearances, striking out seven batters in total while having yet to issue a walk. The Rangers don't have a spot available for Otto in the big-league rotation at the moment, so once his 30-day rehab window elapses, the right-hander could get optioned to Round Rock upon being activated from the 60-day injured list.

Otto (lat) allowed two runs on two hits while striking out four over three innings in a rehab outing for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Otto began his rehab assignment Tuesday, and the right-hander threw 36 pitches (25 strikes). The Rangers will build up his strength, and Otto could eventually rejoin the team's starting rotation. With Jacob deGrom (elbow) headed for Tommy John surgery, there's room. Dane Dunning has been filling in, but his last three starts (5.74 ERA, eight walks) were rocky.

Otto (oblique) is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Round Rock.
EDGE Analysis
It could be a lengthy rehab stint for Otto, who has been out all season after injuring his right lat toward the end of spring training. The 27-year-old posted a 4.64 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 107:62 K:BB over 135.2 innings (27 starts) for the Rangers in 2022.
