Geoff Blum has reached an agreement to join the Astros' television broadcast team as a color analyst. This effectively means that he's retired from baseball. Blum was limited to just 17 games during the 2012 season due to an oblique injury. The 39-year-old infielder played with six teams during his 14-year MLB career, including two stints with the Astros. He'll call 60 games in 2013.

Diamondbacks activated INF Geoff Blum from the 60-day disabled list. Blum batted just .237 (9-for-38) over 12 games during his rehab assignment, but the important part is that he didn't feel any discomfort with his oblique muscle. The Diamondbacks placed John McDonald (back) on the disabled list in a corresponding roster move.

Geoff Blum (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno Saturday. Blum has been out for two months with a torn oblique muscle, so he'll probably require more than a handful of at-bats. He should be back before the end of the month if he can avoid a setback.

Making his first start since coming off the DL on Thursday, Geoff Blum went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI on Monday. That silly two-year, $2.7 million deal handed to Blum finally paid off for the Diamomdbacks, as he knocked in his third, fourth and fifth runs of the season. He doesn't figure to play a lot behind Ryan Roberts this month, but perhaps that will change if he puts together a hot streak.

Barring any setbacks, he should be ready to return this weekend against the Giants. The veteran utility man has been sidelined since late-July with a fractured right pinky finger.
