Aybar is expected to be the Padres' starting shortstop on Opening Day, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 33-year-old joined the Padres this spring as a non-roster invite, but his strong play -- coupled with Luis Sardinas' struggles -- have Aybar lined up to start at short. The veteran declined severely last season, slashing a meager .243/.303/.320 in 459 plate appearances between Atlanta and Detroit. Aybar is just one year removed from having fantasy value as a middle infielder with the Angels, so he could be worth a flyer in deeper formats.

Aybar went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran shortstop was brought into camp to compete for a roster spot. The 33-year-old has shown that he can still get the job done, batting .293 (12-for-41) with two RBI and a stolen base. Aybar is clearly outperforming other shortstop candidates, Luis Sardinas and Allen Cordoba, but his age and status as a non-roster invitee are working against him. The rebuilding Padres may be more inclined to give their younger options first crack at the job, which would leave the veteran without a job. Manager Andy Green hasn't laid out his plan for the shortstop position, so we have to continue to assume Aybar is still in the mix for the starting job.

Aybar went 2-for-3 in Thursday's spring training loss to the Brewers.
EDGE Analysis
The two hits brought the veteran shortstop's Cactus League batting average up to .278 in 18 at-bats. Aybar was signed to a minor league contract this past offseason and is trying to make the roster as a utility infielder.

Aybar signed a minor league contract with the Padres on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 33-year-old spent time with Detroit and Atlanta in 2016, slashing .243/.303/.320 across 459 plate appearances. Although it is a minor league deal, the veteran is supposed to compete with Luis Sardinas for the starting shortstop job.

Aybar (abdomen) is back in the lineup Friday against the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Aybar has been limited to just two plate appearances (both walks) -- and has been scratched from the lineup twice -- over the past week while dealing with left abdominal soreness, but he's now feeling healthy enough to slot back into the lineup Friday. He's slated to man third base and bat eighth against Kevin Gausman.

Aybar (abdomen) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Aybar remains sidelined by the abdominal soreness he has dealt with of late. He is no longer the Tigers' regular shortstop with with Jose Iglesias back in action, but the injury has still likely cost him some playing time given Ian Kinsler's finger injury and the revolving door that is currently being used at third base.

Aybar (abdomen) remains out of the lineup Monday against the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Aybar was a late scratch from Sunday's series finale against the Royals due to abdomen soreness, and he'll sit the team's second straight afternoon contest as well. In his place, Jose Iglesias will start at shortstop, while Jacoby Jones mans the hot corner for Detroit.

Aybar (abdomen) was scratched from the lineup Sunday against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Aybar has now been scratched from the lineup on consecutive days due to the sore left abdominal muscle, but the injury still doesn't seem to be anything overly concerning. He'll be replaced at third base by Andrew Romine on Sunday and should be back in the lineup at some point during the Tigers' upcoming series with the White Sox.

Aybar (abdomen) is back in the lineup Sunday against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
The Tigers held Aybar out of Saturday's lineup with a sore left abdominal muscle, but the injury proved to be only a short-term concern. Since getting traded to the Tigers on Aug. 16, Aybar has gone 9-for-40 (.225 average), which has prevented him from capturing a full-time starting role. Until his production continues to lag, Aybar will have to battle Andrew Romine for duties at third base.
