Edgar Renteria announced his retirement on Thursday. The 36-year-old held a press conference at his home in Colombia to make the decision official. Renteria batted .286/.343/.398 over 16 major league seasons, winning two Gold Gloves and earning All-Star Game nominations five different times. He was named World Series MVP with the Giants in 2010.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com was told by Edgar Renteria's agent, Barry Meister, that his client does not intend to play this season and is leaning toward retirement. Renteria was offered minor league deals from two National League clubs, but turned them down. The 35-year-old will not file retirement papers because he remains open to resuming his career if the right opportunity comes along. The five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner owns a .286/.343/.398 career batting line over 16 major league seasons to go along with 2,327 hits.

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirms Edgar Renteria intends to return for his 17th major league season. Renteria was active for just 96 games this past season and will likely settle for a non-guarnteed contract as a backup infielder. According to Heyman, the Astros, Cubs and Brewers are all potentially good fits.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Royals met with Edgar Renteria's agent during the Winter Meetings. The Royals are currently looking for a backup infielder and are said to be considering multiple options. Renteria, 35, batted .251/.306/.348 with five home runs, 36 RBI and a .654 OPS over 333 plate appearances with the Reds this past season. He may have to settle for a minor league deal.

Renteria got hot during the Giants' World Series run in 2010, but he's been pretty awful the last three regular seasons, most recently batting an ugly .251/.306/.348 for the Reds this year while showing less range than ever at shortstop. The 36-year-old will likely have to settle for a minor league deal.

The Reds are not expected to retain Edgar Renteria or Ramon Hernandez during their five-day exclusive negotiating window. Renteria appeared in 91 games for the Reds and batted .251/.306/.348 with a 3.52 range factor and .959 fielding percentage. Hernandez is a plus hitting catcher who will likely draw some interest as a backup on the open market.

Reds manager Dusty Baker said Edgar Renteria (groin) could return to the lineup during the series with the Marlins that begins Tuesday. Renteria was able to pinch-hit Saturday, but Baker was set to pinch-run for him if he got on. "That's a sign he's getting closer," Baker said. "Maybe in Florida. He had a good at-bat, an excellent at-bat. I was going to have Homer (Bailey) run for him. I have pinch-hitters, pinch-runners, pinch-everything."

Reds manager Dusty Baker thinks Edgar Renteria (groin) could be available to play "in a couple of days." "It's daily," Baker said of Renteria's status. "I was informed that Edgar could be back and ready in a couple of days. It's not easy playing short[handed], especially on the infield." With Zack Cozart having season-ending elbow surgery, the Reds are down to Paul Janish at shortstop for the time being, with Miguel Cairo and Todd Frazier available to play there in a pinch.

John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR in Phoenix reports that the Diamondbacks are looking into Edgar Renteria. The D'Backs, who lost Stephen Drew to a fractured ankle earlier this season, are hoping to pad the depth on their middle infield. Renteria has lost a couple steps defensively and is no longer a consistent offensive performer, but he played a huge role for the Giants last postseason and Arizona may be attracted to his experience.
