David Cooper had a strong day at the plate as the Indians and White Sox played to a 2-2 tie on Friday, going 1-for-1 with a double and a sacrifice fly. Cooper doubled and scored to get the Tribe on the board in the seventh inning, then plated the tying run with a sac fly in the eighth. He'll need to have many more days like this if he wants to win a bench spot on the Opening Day roster however.

Indians signed 1B David Cooper to a one-year contract. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick was the first to report that a deal was close. Cooper appeared in just 13 minor league games (and no major league games) in 2013 due to a serious back issue, but the Indians like his potential and will have in camp next spring on a guaranteed deal. He'll presumably back up Nick Swisher at first base.

David Cooper (back) is hoping to return at some point this season. Cooper underwent a career-saving surgery on April 3 to have titanium screws placed into the T-7 and T-8 vertebrae in his back, so he's still a long way from returning. The Blue Jays released Cooper prior to the season, but he could be re-signed on a minor league deal. At the very least, Cooper plans to resume his playing career in 2014.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that David Cooper (back) may miss most of 2013. Cooper is currently nursing a serious back injury, so this adds some more context to why he was given his release on Wednesday. The Jays have interest in re-signing him to a minor league deal, but he's a long way from returning.

Blue Jays released 1B David Cooper. Cooper hasn't played this spring due to a lingering back issue and now the Jays have decided to cut ties. The 25-year-old batted .300 with four homers and a .788 OPS in 145 plate appearances in the majors last season. Assuming he gets back to full health at some point, he could do well with a change of scenery. Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Yankees will take a look.
