The roster move is retroactive to Sunday, one day after Dunning made his seventh start of the season while taking a no-decision against the Royals. The Rangers haven't indicated that Dunning sustained the injury at any point during that outing, but the right-hander's shoulder was evidently bothersome coming out of that start. Dunning is without a precise target date to return from the IL, though manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that the 29-year-old isn't expected to have an especially lengthy stay on the shelf. While Dunning joins Nathan Eovaldi (groin), Max Scherzer (back), Cody Bradford (ribs), Jacob deGrom (elbow) and Tyler Mahle (elbow) on the shelf, the Rangers should have back-end rotation spots available for both Jose Urena and Jack Leiter.

However, Dunning ran into trouble in the top of the fifth, allowing four Royals to reach base in a span of five hitters, resulting in two runs and a two-out hook. That prevented Dunning from qualifying for the victory, which would have given him his first winning streak of the campaign. He still managed to lower his season ERA slightly to 4.10, but it was a disappointing outing after Dunning punched out 10 batters in a dominant win his previous time on the mound.

Dunning (3-2) earned the win after he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out 10 in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Reds.

Dunning was able to get back into the win column for the first time since April 12, recording a season-high 10 punchouts in the process. The right-hander tossed five scoreless frames before ultimately being tagged with a pair of runs, one of which was unearned, in the top of the sixth. Dunning also avoided giving up a home run in the outing, making it his first start in 2024 during which he was able to do so. The 29-year-old now owns a 4.13 ERA, and he's tentatively set to be back on the mound Saturday in Kansas City.

Dunning (2-2) took the loss Tuesday against Seattle, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks across 4.1 innings. He struck out seven.

EDGE Analysis

Dunning was hit hard Tuesday, surrendering four extra-base hits, including a pair of two-run home runs by Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh. He's allowed a home run in all five of his starts this season and is tied for the second-most homers allowed in MLB (seven). Despite his power troubles, Dunning has been a quality source of strikeouts, punching out seven batters in three of his five starts this season. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Reds on Sunday.

Dunning came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Tigers, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks over five-plus innings. He struck out five.

The right-hander tossed 97 pitches (56 strikes) before being lifted after a Spencer Torkelson double to lead off the sixth inning, and Dunning missed out on his third win of the year when the Rangers' bullpen squandered a 4-2 lead. Dunning wasn't very efficient Friday, throwing just 46 of 80 pitches for strikes with only five whiffs. It was his lowest pitch total of the year but Texas was up 12-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The 29-year-old righty has allowed exactly three runs in each of his first three starts this season. Dunning is lined up to take the mound in Detroit next week.

While it wasn't the cleanest line, Dunning has now turned in two straight quality starts to begin his 2024 season. The only damage against him Sunday came via Yordan Alvarez's three-run shot in the third inning. Dunning's velocity is noticeably down in 2024; his fastball averaged just 88.5 mph Sunday and he threw it only six times. Despite that, the 29-year-old has produced a 14:7 K:BB through 13 frames. Dunning is currently projected for a rematch in Houston next weekend.

EDGE Analysis

Dunning cruised through six shutout frames before coughing up home runs to Richie Palacios and Jose Siri in the seventh inning. Dunning tossed 93 pitches, including 18 whiffs, which would've been his second-best total in 2023. The 29-year-old has seen his strikeout rate consistently drop throughout his MLB career -- down to 7.3 K/9 in 2023 -- but he posted a 10.7 K/9 this spring and is off to a good start after Monday's outing. Dunning is currently in line to face the Astros at home this weekend.

Dunning appears locked in for the regular season, telling Stefan Stevenson of SI.com that his delivery was in line after flying open in his previous spring start. The right-hander was also pleased with his forkball, a new pitch, which he estimated throwing about 20 times among his 90 pitches. Stevenson also confirmed with manager Bruce Bochy that Dunning and Jon Gray will split the final spring start next Tuesday against the Red Sox. That suggests his regular-season debut could be Sunday, March 31, against the Cubs or Monday, April 1, against the Rays.
