Cubs designated INF Cody Ransom for assignment. Ransom provided some pop in spurts for the Cubs, but he's ultimately hit just .203/.304/.449 with nine homers over 57 games. His removal from the 40-man roster was needed in order to add Scott Baker.

Cody Ransom is batting .350/.435/.900 with three homers in his first eight games with the Cubs. Ransom and Luis Valbuena have formed a surprisingly productive platoon at third base, as the two are hitting a combined .267 (27-for-101) with eight home runs and 17 RBI. The two will continue to share the position while Ian Stewart tries to figure things out at Triple-A. "He's been around a long time,'' manager Dale Sveum said of Ransom. ''He's always hit home runs. He'll strike out against right-handers, but he's always hit left-handers. He's dependable in the field, a no-panic kind of player.''

Cody Ransom will start at third base Tuesday against the Reds. Ransom, who was claimed off waivers from the Padres last week, will hit seventh against left-hander Tony Cingrani. He could split time with Luis Valbuena at third base in the short-term.

Cubs claimed INF Cody Ransom off waivers from the Padres. Ransom was hitless in his fist 11 at-bats with the Padres and got designated for assignment on April 12. He will function as a utility infielder for Chicago.

Padres designated INF Cody Ransom for assignment. Ransom made the Opening Day roster as the final bench player, but went hitless in his first 11 at-bats including five strikeouts. With Chase Headley progressing rapidly in his recovery, and the Padres content to roll with Jedd Gyorko at third base in the meantime, Ransom was expendable. He'll likely have to settle for a minor league deal elsewhere.

Padres purchased the contract of INF Cody Ransom from Triple-A Tucson. Ransom made the team after Logan Forsythe had a setback with his foot injury. He has enough pop to where he could be relevant in NL-only leagues for a short time.

Padres manager Bud Black said Wednesday that Cody Ransom will make the Opening Day roster. Logan Forsythe had a setback with his foot on Tuesday, so Ransom is suddenly the favorite to start at third base while Chase Headley (thumb) is on the mend. The 36-year-old batted .220/.312/.411 with 11 homers for the Diamondbacks and Brewers last season and could have some short-term value in NL-only fantasy leagues.

Padres signed INF Cody Ransom to a minor league contract. He'll receive an invitation to spring training. Ransom batted .220/.312/.411 with 11 homers for the D'Backs and Brewers in 2012 and should have a decent chance at winning a bench job.
