The Cardinals have promoted pitching prospect Carlos Martinez from High-A Palm Beach to Double-A Springfield. Martinez is still on the minor league disabled list with shoulder tendinitis, but he was destined for the Double-A level this year anyway and the Cardinals wanted to get him a head-start on making all the necessary off-field adjustments. "This gives him a chance to get his feet wet, get acclimated to life in Southwestern Missouri," farm director John Vuch told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Instead of having him do those two things simultaneously, this gives us a chance to start on one."

The Cardinals placed pitching prospect Carlos Martinez on the 7-day DL with shoulder tendinitis. The 20-year-old right-hander was 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA over seven starts for High-A Palm Beach. He's expected to miss two weeks, though obviously it could be longer; shoulder issues with phenom pitchers are understandably handled with care. Baseball America's 27th rated prospect over the winter has posted a 2.70 ERA over three seasons on the farm.

Cubs signed RHP Carlos Martinez to a minor league contract. Martinez, 20, is a 6-foot-4 right-hander with a fastball that reportedly clocks in the low 90s. He is considered a ''work in progress,'' by Baseball America, and was used primarily as a reliever while in Cuba.

The Cardinals have promoted pitching prospect Carlos Martinez to High-A Palm Beach. The 19-year-old right-hander earned the promotion Monday after posting a stellar 2.33 ERA and 50/14 K/BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings this season for Low-A Quad Cities. Martinez is quickly gaining major hype and should continue to rise through the Cardinals' farm system.
