Smith (upper body) won't play Tuesday against the Penguins, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Smith on the shelf, Will Butcher is expected to return to New Jersey's lineup for Tuesday's contest. Smith, who's picked up 21 points in 44 games this season, will be reevaluated ahead of Thursday's rematch with Pittsburgh.

Smith dished out a pair of power-play helpers to go with three shots and a plus-2 rating in Thursday's 6-3 win over the Sabres.
EDGE Analysis
Smith got on the scoresheet twice in the first four minutes, with both goals coming off the stick of Pavel Zacha. The rookie defenseman hasn't tickled twine since Jan. 30, but Smith continues to mark the scoresheet frequently via assist, having dished out half as many helpers (19) as games played (38) in his young career.

Smith drew two assists with four PIM and a plus-3 rating in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Philadelphia.
EDGE Analysis
Smith assisted on goals by Michael McLeod and Travis Zajac to help the Devils build a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes. The 20-year-old rearguard upped his season point total to 17, tops among the NHL's rookie defensemen and seven better than his closest competitor, Carolina's Jake Bean. Smith has been an impactful offensive player despite going without a goal since late-January.

Smith dished out two helpers -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win over the Sabres.
EDGE Analysis
Smith assisted on a Miles Wood power-play tally early in the third period and added another apple on Pavel Zacha's overtime winner. The rookie defenseman has provided the Devils with a much-needed offensive jolt from the blue line, racking up 10 points through his first 15 games.

Smith was placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol Tuesday, Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Devils now have 14 players in the league's COVID-19 protocol, including Smith. Their next scheduled game is Feb. 9 against the Penguins, but it wouldn't be surprising if that was pushed off further. The rookie defenseman was off to a hot start with eight points through nine games.

Smith scored a power-play goal in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Sabres.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie had gone scoreless for two games after his five-game point streak to begin the season was snapped, but he got back in the black Saturday. Smith has looked very good so far, racking up two goals and seven points in his first eight NHL contests, but as yet he hasn't been able to displace Damon Severson on the point for the Devils' top power-play unit. If the 20-year-old continues to produce, though, his role should only grow.

Smith had an assist in Saturday's 2-1 overtime win over the Bruins.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie defenseman was credited with a goal on a pinballing shot in the season opener, then added a helper in this one to start his career with a two-game point streak. Smith's an offensive-minded blueliner who's worth tracking in dynasty formats, but he'll be hard-pressed to gain fantasy relevance in redraft formats at this stage of his career on the low-scoring Devils. He's getting time on the power play and saw the ice in overtime in each of New Jersey's first two games, so the team isn't using training wheels with its 2018 first-round pick.

Smith finished 2019-20 with 59 points in 46 games for WHL Spokane. He was also named to the WHL Western Conference First All-Star Team.
EDGE Analysis
The 2018 No. 17 overall pick by the Devils also racked up an insane plus-49 rating, thanks in large part to often sharing the ice with WHL scoring champion and Wild prospect Adam Beckman (48 goals, 107 points) and center Eli Zummack (86 points). Highlighted by an eight-point (!) outing against Seattle on Feb. 28 and 15 multi-point games overall, Smith upped his production to 1.28 points per game from marks of 1.21, 1.06 and 0.48 in the prior three campaigns. The blueliner technically has another year of WHL elibility remaining since he doesn't turn 21 until March, but he looks as sure a bet as any to open 2020-21 professionally -- whether it be with AHL Binghamton or New Jersey.

Smith score twice and added an assist in WHL Spokane's 5-2 win over Seattle Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
The Devils surprised many by shipping Smith back for one final season of junior hockey, and the 19-year-old has picked up (six points in three games) right where he left off last year. Smith is primed for another monster season and will be a key cog for Team Canada at the World Juniors this coming holiday season.
