DAILY PRIME TODAY: CAN THOMAS BE A FANTASY STAR? primepucks.com Mon 3/10/14 5:52 AM
While there were a few games played yesterday, the news with the most fantasy implications revolves around the Dallas Star's Kari Lehtonen who sustained an apparent concussion on Saturday and could not finish the game. The comments from Dallas coach Lindsey Ruff seems to suggest that the goaltender could miss some time, opening the door for recently acquired Tim Thomas to make his first start for the Stars tonight. More importantly, the two-time Vezina winner could make a serious fantasy splash as the Stars are holding on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Thomas was 16-20-3 with a 2.87 GAA with Florida, but self-admittedly that "money" goalies perform at a higher level when the post-season is at stake. With the Panthers, he was playing out the season. Now all of the sudden, he is thrown back on the big stage. Given Dallas has 4 games this week, Thomas makes for a great start, but his dividends can pay off the rest of the season if Lehtonen's head injury turns out to be serious. Monitor this situation closely as this new Star is about to get a huge boost in fantasy value.
The Ranger's Henrik Lundqvist seems back on track with his second straight quality start, a 30-save blanking of the Red Wings. Not entirely on his game since arriving from the Olympics, his overall pedestrian numbers so far- 24 wins, 2.50 GAA and .916 SP- suggest that there is huge room for improvement. With playoff momentum on the line, look for Lundqvist's numbers to drastically pick up moving forward.
With the arrival of Marian Gaborik in Los Angeles, the King who has clicked the most is Jeff Carter. The 29-year old had a heck of a night in the 4-2 win over Edmonton, generating most of the offense with two goals and an assist. His move to the second line will help his even-strength production, while he still holds a spot on the top power play. Until Gaborik proves something, Carter is the most valuable fantasy forward asset on the Kings outside of Anze Kopitar.
ADD'EM: POST DEADLINE WAIVER TARGETS primepucks.com Sun 3/9/14 8:15 PM
Ales Hemsky, RW Edmonton (Owned in 7.5% of ESPN leagues)
Nobody needed a change of scenery more than the talented Hemsky, who never fit into Edmonton's long-term plans and was always the subject of many trade rumors. Yes, he is super-prone to injuries, but with 20 games left and getting a new lease on life while playing with a rejuvenated Jason Spezza, the winger could be a point-per-game performer over the final stretch. He collected three assists in just his second game with Ottawa in the win over Winnipeg on Saturday.
David Legwand, C Detroit (Owned in 60.9% of ESPN league)
The underrated former Nashville center has become an instant fantasy target as his trade to Detroit means that he will be centering the top line with Pavel Datsyuk injured. With two "hot" wingers in Johan Franzen and Gustav Nyquist, Legwand will get his share of points in the short-term. His fantasy value will be somewhat diminished by minimal power-play time on the primary unit, but he should get plenty of helpers.
Tyler Myers, D Buffalo (Owned in 39.9 % of ESPN leagues)
Since returning from the Olympic break, the hulking defender has heated up with six points (3G/3A) in the last 6 games. Myers has been the "poster boy" of inconsistency since his stellar Calder trophy rookie season, but he has played well of late even amidst the rampant trade rumors. Now that the deadline has come and gone, look for the 24-year old to take another step in salvaging his promising NHL career. He warrants fantasy consideration as he seems to have taken strongly to new coach Ted Nolan.
Eddie Lack, G Vancouver ( Owned in 69.0% of ESPN leagues)
Having lost 3 straight, Vancouver's new no. 1 goalie responded with a strong effort in the 2-1 win over Calgary on Saturday. Yes, offensive support will be LACKING (funny, no?) on most nights, but the young Lack is firmly entrenched as the top guy in the Canuck's crease, now that the Roberto Luongo saga has finally been resolved. If you are in need of starting goalie help, give him a shot.
Tim Thomas, G Dallas (owned in 42.1% of ESPN leagues)
The former Vezina winner, recently acquired in a trade from Florida, is slated to gain some starts for Dallas as Kari Lehtonen has apparently suffered a concussion on Saturday. In coach Lindsey Ruff's own words: "He is not doing well". Translation- all Lehtonen owners need to snag Thomas ASAP, as he could have huge fantasy value if the Swede is out for an extended period of time. Dallas is far superior to his ...
Goalie Start: Thomas expected to start on Monday. dailyfaceoff.com Sun 3/9/14 7:56 PM
Thomas stopped all six shots he faced after replacing the injured Kari Lehtonen on Saturday. He entered the game while it was 3-3 and the Stars took the lead with under five minutes in the third, earning Thomas his firs win with Dallas. With Lehtonen battling a head injury, Thomas looks to be in line to start vs. the Blue Jackets.
Trade: The Panthers have traded Tim Thomas to the Stars for Dan Ellis. dailyfaceoff.com Wed 3/5/14 2:56 PM
The Stars acquire the veteran netminder to push Kari Lehtonen for starts. Lehtonen is a skilled goaltender, but has been in consistent throughout his career. Adding Thomas gives the Stars two strong goaltending options as they push for a playoff spot. Thomas was 16-20-3 with a 2.87 GAA and .909 SV% with the Panthers.
SPECIAL TRADE DEADLINE DAILY PRIME TODAY: TRADER JOE PART II primepucks.com Tue 3/4/14 4:58 PM
NOW WITH THE NHL TRADE DEADLINE 24 HOURS AWAY THINGS ARE STARTING TO HEAT UP! "TRADER" JOE IS BACK WITH AN UPDATE ON THE TRADE FRONT.
JASON SPEZZA { OTT }---THE SENATORS TODAY SAID THEY ARE NOT LOOKING TO MOVE THEIR CAPTAIN, BUT ARE LOOKING TO FIND A WINGER TO PLAY WITH SPEZZA, WHICH SHOULD HELP OUT HIS VALUE THE REST OF THE WAY.
CHRISTIAN EHROFF [ BUF }---THIS IS ONE PLAYER THAT THE BUFFALO SHOULD HANG ON TO! WITH A CAP-FRIENDLY HIT OF ONLY $4 MILLION A YEAR, WHY MOVE HIM? BUT LIKE THE REST OF THE SABRES, HIS VALUE ONLY GOES UP WITH A TRADE.
TIM THOMAS { FLA }---I AM A LITTLE SURPRISED THAT HIS NAME HAS NOT COME UP MORE OFTEN. THIS IS A PLAYER THAT LED THE BRUINS TO THE STANLEY CUP A FEW YEARS BACK. IF HE GETS MOVED, IT WOULD BE AS A BACK-UP SO IT DOES NOT HELP HIS FANTASY VALUE.
BRAD BOYLES [ FLA ]--- LOOKS LIKE THE PANTHERS WOULD MOVE HIM FOR THE RIGHT PRICE, BUT HE IS NO MORE THAN A BOTTOM 6 WINGER NOW , SO DO NOT EXPECT HIS POINT TOTAL TO IMPROVE WITH A TRADE .
MARIAN GABORIK [ CBS ]---HIS NAME HAS POPPED UP A FEW TIMES THIS WEEK BUT I JUST FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THEY WOULD MOVE A PLAYER WHO PUTS UP THE KIND OF NUMBERS HE DOES WHEN HE IS HEALTHY!
DAVID LEGWARD { NAS }---IT MIGHT BE THE RIGHT TIME FOR NASHVILLE TO MOVE THE 33-YEAR OLD CENTER WHO IS HAVING A NICE PRODUCTIVE YEAR. I FEEL THAT HIS VALUE WILL TAKE A SMALL HIT THE REST OF THE WAY REGARDLESS.
MIKE CAMMALLERI { CGY }--- I THINK THIS ISA PLAYER THAT WILL BE MOVED JUST BEFORE THE DEADLINE AFTER SOME OF THE BIG NAMES GET TRADED. HE MIGHT HELP OUT A PLAYOFF CONTENDER BUT WILL NOT DO MUCH FOR YOUR FANTASY TEAM.
LASTEST ON SOME PLAYERS WE TALKED ABOUT YESTERDAY:
RYAN CALLAHAN { NYR }---CALLAHAN HAS LOWERED HIS ASKING PRICE FROM 7 YEARS TO 6, BUT I STILL FEEL TIME FOR THE RANGERS TO SAY GOODBYE!
RYAN KESLER { VAN }--- TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK. JUST WAITING TO SEE WHO OVERPAYS FOR HIM {RANGERS, PENS, FLYERS }
MATT MOULSON { BUF }---THE RUMORS STARTED TO FLY YESTERDAY AFTER MOULSON MISSED PRACTICE. HIS VALUE SHOULD IMPROVE WHEN HE GETS MOVED .
