THE GOALIE EDGE: 1/16/14 primepucks.com Thu 1/16/14 3:50 PM

Upon his return from injury, Ben Bishop continued his stellar goaltending for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a dominating performance over the Rangers. The American goalie is among the NHL elite as he is currently on an eleven-game streak without defeat, going 9-0-2 with a 1.49 GAA. The Islanders had their 7-game road win streak snapped at Florida.. Although they have been very successful away from home, they have been surrendering early leads on a constant basis. That won't fly against Bishop. Huge edge to ‘Bolts . An undermanned Detroit team will have a tough time against an inspired Henrik Lundqvist and the surging New York Rangers. Without most of their offensive stars, the Wings have averaged only 2.13 goals during a 5-8-3 stretch. On the other hand, "King Henrik" has been air-tight in goal, posting a 1.76 GAA and .944 SP while winning 3 of his last 4. Rangers win a low, scoring affair ... "Fresh" off a trade for Devan Dubnyk, Nashville will have their hands full in Philly. Having lost 3 straight to Flyers on the road, Steve Mason will be trying to shrug off consecutive losses where he has allowed 8 combined goals. Overall, he has been sharp with a 19-11 record, and 2.42 GAA, so expect him to play much better against an offensively challenged Predator squad. Is Dubnyk the answer? Time will tell, but his numbers for Edmonton- 3.36 GAA and .894 SP- suggest otherwise. Mason and the Flyers prevail.. The Florida Panthers are quietly rolling as Tim Thomas has gotten on track with a 3-1-2 record in his last 6 games and a 1.90 GAA. Even with San Jose backup Alex Stalock in goal, playing in "SHARK infested waters" represents a huge challenge for the Panthers on home ice. The Sharks might be poised for a let-down after the hard, fought 2-1 SO win over Washington, so we sniff an upset and side with the underdogs. Big game for Thomas tonight.. A 9-1 thumping in Anaheim will have Vancouver playing inspired hockey against a struggling Phoenix team. Where has the real Mike Smith gone? The Coyotes top goaltender has faltered big-time, so don't be surprised if the Canucks win big in wake of of their epic no-show performance last night. FANTASY MUST-START Steve Mason, Philadelphia vs. Nashville Ben Bishop, Tampa Bay vs. NYI Henrik Lundqvist, NYR vs. Detroit SLEEPER ALERT Tim Thomas, Florida vs. San Jose Eddie Lack *, Vancouver @ Phoenix *: NOT CONFIRMED GOALIE DAILY PICKS Steve: (60-36): Ben Bishop Ray: (54-40): Ben Bishop Mike: (44-33): Ben Bishop

Goalie Start: Mason starts against the Predators. dailyfaceoff.com Thu 1/16/14 2:56 PM

Mason allowed three goals on 19 shots in a 4-3 win over the Sabres on Tuesday. After being yanked in his previous start Mason didn't have the best outing, but was able to walk away with the W. In his first start against the Predators he allowed two goals on 36 shots in a 3-2 shootout win.

Goalie Start: Mason in net for the Flyers vs. the Sabres. dailyfaceoff.com Tue 1/14/14 2:56 PM

Mason was yanked after allowing five goals on 17 shots in a 6-4 loss to the Lightning on Saturday. It was the first time this season that Mason has allowed more than four goals. He has a good matchup tonight against a low-scoring Sabres squad.

ALL GOALIES CONFIRMED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED AT TIME OF PRINT Toronto ended their 4-game losing streak in less than convincing fashion by sneaking by the Devils in the 3- 2 SO win. Now they face a Boston team who has defeated them 11 times in the last 12 meetings. In particular, Tuukka Rask(LIKELY) has ruled the Leafs with a 9-1 record in the last 10 games, including a 1.31 GAA. I am not sold on Leafs turning it around just yet. Love the "B's" in this spot.. The red-hot New York Rangers are streaking, going 8-2-1 in their last 11 games. Henrik Lundqvist has found his stride over his last 4 starts, winning 3 and posting a 1.97 GAA and a .943 SP during that span. The Lightning will get Ben Bishop back tonight, which would be good news for Tampa fans. They have struggled during his absence, while Bishop has never lost to the "Blueshirts" in 4 career meetings. This matchup should be close, but expect the "King" to continue rolling ... The Islanders go for their 8th straight overall road win tonight in Florida. Even with a re-focused Tim Thomas playing very well for the Panthers, it's hard to bet against the NHL' s most prolific scoring line of late in John Tavares, Tomas Vanek, and Kyle Okposo. In relief of an injured Evgeni Nabokov, Kevin Poulin's fantasy value is on the rise. There could be a mild letdown, as the Isles have been beating some tough teams away from home, but Poulin should prevail.. We like the Philadelphia Flyers to end their two-game slide against any Buffalo goaltender not named Ryan Miller. Jhonas Enroth, who has compiled a 1-8-4 record with a respectable 2.46 GAA, will be in net tonight against a "hungry" Flyers squad. After allowing 4 goals for the first time this season in the 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay, Steve Mason will be making huge amends and bounce back with a strong win... Easy win for Jaroslav Halak and the Blues, as they should have an easy time fending off the struggling Phoenix Coyotes in the second half of a back-to-back set. FANTASY MUST-STARTS Jaroslav Halak, St. Louis vs. Phoenix Henrik Lundqvist, NYR vs. Tampa Bay Kevin Poulin , NYI @ Florida Steve Mason, Philadelphia @ Buffalo Tuukka Rask, Boston vs. Toronto SLEEPER ALERT None DAILY GOALIE PICKS Steve: (58-36) Steve Mason Ray: (52-40) Jaroslav Halak Mike: (44-33) TBA

Ten games in the NHL yesterday. Tampa Bay and the Flyers kicked things off as the Lightning beat Philadelphia 6-3.  Valtteri Filppula had a goal and an assist for Tampa. He now has 18 goals and 36 points on the season.  His name is hard to spell, and he is a waiver wire type player.  Flyer goaltender Steve Mason had a night to forget as he allowed 5 goals on only 17 shots. Sometimes you have games like that.  He is still having a good year with 18 wins.  Jakub Voracek had 2 goals for the Flyers, and while he has only 32 points on the season, he has been hot lately with 5 points in his last 4 games...Montreal beat Chicago 2-1 in OT as veteran defenseman Andre Markov scored both goals for the Canadians.  Markov has been overshadowed by fellow defenseman P K Subban, but he can still bring it with 24 points on the season... New Jersey beat Florida in OT as well as defenseman Marek Zidlicky scored the game winner.   Like Markov, Zidlicky is an old veteran who can still rack up points.  He has 24 on the year.  Devils forward Michael Ryder scored the other goal.  He has scored a goal in 4 straight games, and he has 7 points in his last 7 games.   He once scored 62 points for Dallas.  Grab him while he's hot....Ottawa beat Nashville 2-1 in a shootout, as Senators goalie Craig Anderson was outstanding with 32 saves.  After a brutal start to the season, Anderson has been steadily improving, and he now has 15 wins on the year.  Ottawa's Kyle Turris scored a goal, and with 34 points on the season he is worth a look as a 6th forward option. At 24 years old he can still get better...Columbus pounded Winnipeg 6-3.  Bryan Little had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets.  Little is a lot like Turris, just on the edge of being fantasy worthy...  Colorado beat the Wild 4-2 as young forward Ryan O'Reilly had 2 goals for the Avalanche. We like O'Reilly, but with only 30 points on the season we can't recommend him yet.  He is only 22 years old.  He has 70 point potential in a year or two.  Paul Stastny left the game with an injury...Anaheim continued its winning ways with a 5-3 win over Phoenix. Ryan Getzlaf left the game with a LBI.  Mathieu Perreault had 3 assists for the Ducks, and while he has only 25 points on the season, he has been hot lately with 6 points in his last 3 games. Goalie Start: Mason gets the nod for the Flyers this afternoon. dailyfaceoff.com Sat 1/11/14 2:56 PM

Mason stopped 19 of 20 shots in a win over the Canadiens on Wednesday. The win was Mason's 18th of the season and seventh in his last eight starts. We have not seen this Mason since his Calder Trophy winning season in 2008-09, but it exactly what the Flyers hoped when they acquired him last season. This afternoon he will take on the Lightning at home where he is 11-6-0 with a 2.12 GAA and .927 SV% this season.

Goalie Start: Mason starts for the Flyers. dailyfaceoff.com Wed 1/8/14 2:56 PM

Mason allowed three goals on 29 shots in a win over the Coyotes on Saturday. It was Mason's sixth win in his last seven games and 17th of the season. Tonight he will face the Habs for the second time this season, in the first meeting (Dec. 12) he stopped 20 of 21 shots in a 2-1 win.

Goalie Start: Mason starts vs. the Coyotes. dailyfaceoff.com Sat 1/4/14 2:56 PM

Mason allowed two goals on 31 shots in a 2-1 loss to the Avalanche on Thursday. The loss broke a five game winning streak, but he will get a chance to get back in the W column tonight in Phoenix. In October, when he faced the Coyotes in Philly he allowed two goals on 31 shots in a 2-1 loss.
