Hartnell played 17 years in the NHL for Nashville, Philadelphia and Columbus, logging 1249 games in which he tallied 327 goals, 380 assists and perhaps most notably 1809 PIM. The winger played with a physicality the endeared him to home-team crowds and vilified him among the opposition. Selected sixth overall in the 2000 NHL Draft, the Saskatchewan native certainly lived up to expectations, including be named an All-Star in 2011-12.

Hartnell, a pending unrestricted free agent, is keeping an open mind about the possibility of playing again in 2018-19, Sportsnet reports.

"Our son isn't in school. If there's a team that's the right fit for all of us, we are 100 percent going." A gritty veteran with a scorer's touch, Hartnell has amassed 327 goals and 380 assists over 1,249 career regular-season contests between the Predators, Flyers and Blue Jackets. If he does latch on with another club, it would presumably be a one- or two-year deal.

This doesn't come as a big surprise, as Hartnell routinely saw fewer than 10 minutes of ice time per game down the stretch in the regular season, and was a healthy scratch for nine of the Preds' 14 playoff games. Now a pending unrestricted free agent, the 36-year-old Hartnell said he will contempate retirement over the summer. "I'll take some time away to think about it," Hartnell said. "These last couple months, just wondering if I still have it, if I could still skate. I thought I played pretty solid [last season], but your heart's got to be there too with it, and that passion. I feel like it's there."

Hartnell would welcome a return to Nashville next season, though he's still contemplating what his future holds, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

The Predators selected the hard-nosed winger sixth overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and he returned to Nashville this season after spending his prime years with the Flyers and Blue Jackets -- he'd end up with 13 goals and 11 assists over 62 regular-season contests. However, he was a spare part through the first two rounds of the playoffs having only appeared in four games and missing nine. Given that he's a pending unrestricted free agent, Hartnell very well could end up with a different club despite how he'd "love to come back" to the Preds.

Hartnell returned from a three-game absence as a healthy scratch for Saturday's regular-season finale against Columbus. He subbed in for the Viktor Arvidsson (rest) on the top line, and recorded a power-play assist in 14:33 of ice time.

EDGE Analysis

With the Preds set to begin their first-round playoff series against the Avalanche in the coming week, it's unclear what Hartnell's role will be. The 35-year-old averaged less than 10 minutes per game down the stretch and was a healthy scratch six times over the last 20 games of the regular season. He could either prove to be a late-round steal in your playoff pool, or a complete bust. Further, his one-year contract with the Preds is set to expire after this season, so Hartnell will likely be looking to ply his trade with a new team come October.

The writing was on the wall for Hartnell, whose ice time had dipped to below the 10-minute mark for three consecutive games earlier in March. The 35-year-old veteran was brought in during the offseason in an attempt to provide some scoring depth for the Preds, but with the emergence of younger players like Kevin Fiala and Colton Sissons this season, along with the recent acquisition of Ryan Hartman, Hartnell now looks to be the odd man out in Nashville. Bench him immediately.

Hartnell extended his goal-scoring streak to three games Sunday against the Blues.

At 35 years old, the veteran winger is no longer the offensive force he once was, but he's been showing flashes of his old form lately. He currently has eight points in his last 11 games, bringing his season total to 19 points in 47 games. He continues to skate in a third-line capacity for the Preds with an average ice time of just 12:31, but that includes 1:29 worth of power-play time. This makes Hartnell a decent option in deeper fantasy formats.

Hartnell recorded two assists and a major penalty for fighting during Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran is beginning to find an offensive groove with three goals and five assists through his past 16 contests. Obviously, those aren't go-to numbers, but Hartnell has slotted into more of a supporting role with an average of just 12:34 of ice time per game this season. He's still on the fantasy radar in deep settings (especially formats including PIM), but his upside is significantly capped considering his age and limited minutes.

Hartnell has just four points in his last 17 games, and has averaged just 10:26 in ice time over that span.

EDGE Analysis

Despite occasionally filling in on the second line for the injured Filip Forsberg (hand), Hartnell still regularly sees ice time in the single digits, and no longer sees any meaningful time on the power play. As a result, his overall fantasy value has declined significantly, and you should no longer be relying on him in the majority of standard formats.

Hartnell scored his fifth goal of the season in Saturday's win over the Wild.

EDGE Analysis

Hartnell hadn't scored since Nov.3 against Anaheim and is stuck on just eight points through 24 contests. He saw just 10:26 of ice time Saturday and is currently skating in a bottom-six role. Hartnell can be of value in some very deep leagues due to his 47 PIM or the occasional power-play marker, but at this stage in his career, it's best to avoid him in most formats.
