Clemmensen will hang up his skates and take a job as the Devils' goaltending development coach, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports. The 37-year-old Clemmensen was slated to become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday, but with little more than a reserve role with an AHL club likely to be offered up to him from prospective teams, it appears he's decided to retire. A veteran of 12 NHL seasons, Clemmensen will wrap up his career with a 73-59 record, 2.79 GAA, and .905 save percentage over 191 appearances with the Devils, Maple Leafs, and Panthers.

The Devils will not to attempt to re-sign Clemmensen in the offseason, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports. This news hardly comes as a surprise, as Keith Kinkaid already has the Devils' backup goaltender job firmly secured. Clemmensen may get a chance with a club that lacks goalie depth, but it is unlikely that he will see much action in the NHL in 2015-16. He went 12-11-0 with a 2.23 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 27 games with AHL Albany last season.

However, because the mumps can lay dormant for a number of weeks before taking effect, it's likely Clemmensen acquired the virus during his stint with the parent club early in December. In any event, he'll be isolated from the AHL squad until further notice to prevent further spreading of the disease.

Though Clemmensen has spent more time with the parent club this season, it's clear that Keith Kinkaid, who was recalled from Albany in his stead Tuesday, is the Devils' preferred No. 2 option organization-wide. However, because of the heavy workload incurred by Cory Schneider, the Devils have chosen to keep Clemmensen for most of the season in an effort to get the more youthful Kinkaid some more development time in the minors. With Schneider being granted a rare day off Tuesday, the Devils will take the opportunity to give Kinkaid a spin as their starter. Kinkaid is likely to return to the minors shortly thereafter, with Clemmensen then expected to rejoin the Devils.

The former Canuck had started 20 straight games, but the team finally gave him a rest Saturday, turning to the backup Clemmensen instead. Unfortunately, Clemmensen's lackluster performance Saturday is exactly why Schneider will continue to be an absolute workhorse in the Devils' crease. Clemmensen's struggles over the last few years are probably the reason he won't see much action as the backup to Schneider this season. Even when he's called upon, he won't be very useful for fantasy goers.
