Panik landing on the waiver wire certainly comes as a surprise considering the team acquired him from Detroit in exchange for Nick Leddy over the summer. IN 48 games for the Red Wings and Capitals last year, the 30-year-old Panik notched four goals, nine helpers and 59 shots. The Slovak has certainly bounced around the league, having played for six different clubs over his nine-year NHL career and could wind up with a seventh if somebody is willing to snatch him off waiver. If not, Panik figures to be assigned to AHL Bridgeport for the start of the season.

Panik was traded from the Red Wings to the Islanders on Friday in exchange for Nick Leddy.

Panik has been moved around across the last few seasons, and he'll now join his fifth team in the last five years to begin the 2021 campaign. He averaged 12:22 of ice time per game across 48 appearances with the Capitals and Red Wings last year and recorded four goals and nine assists.

Panik garnered an assist Saturday in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Stars.

Panik has a goal and an assist through six games following his trade to the Wings at the deadline. The journeyman, whom the Capitals gave up in the deal that also sent Jakub Vrana to Motown, finds himself in a third-line role, averaging 13:40 of ice time. Indeed, Panik is going to be utilized more frequently now that he's in Detroit, but the tradeoff is that he's on an inferior offense.

Panik scored a goal on two shots and added six hits in Thursday's 7-3 win over the Stars.

EDGE Analysis

Panik wasn't as impressive as his fellow former Capital Jakub Vrana, who scored four times, but Panik made his own contribution. The 30-year-old struck at 19:49 of the first period and ultimately forced the Stars to replace Anton Khudobin with Jake Oettinger for the final two periods. Panik has just 10 points, 48 shots on net, 62 hits and a minus-10 rating in 41 outings between the Red Wings and the Capitals this year.

Panik (not injury related) will make his Red Wings debut Thursday against the Blackhawks, NHL.com reports.
