THE GOALIE EDGE: 11/29/2013 primepucks.com Fri 11/29/13 11:33 AM

ALL GOALIES CONFIRMED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED AT TIME OF PRINT An early bird special this day after Thanksgiving as the Philadelphia Flyers are hosting the Winnipeg Jets. Steve Mason gets the nod against Ondrej Pavelec. Mason is having the better year out of the two statistically speaking and being on home ice should be enough advantage as the Flyers try to get back on the winning track....Then we have a matinee special as well with the New York Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist visit the Boston Bruins. Both goalies have something to prove in this one with the "King" trying to add to last game's win against Florida and Tuukka Rask trying to shake his lackluster effort against the Detroit Red Wings.  This one just may last long into a shootout..."Hockey all day" continues as the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ben Bishop (LIKELY) will face the surging Pittsburgh Penguins at 4:00 pm (ET). Marc-Andre Fleury (LIKELY) will be in net for the Pens as he has been getting plenty of support lately with the return of James Neal to the lineup. Bishop has a nicked-up hand, so the Penguins may try to take advantage of that.  It was a wild one last time these two teams met, ending in a 5-4 Pens' victory. This will be a good test for the Bolt....The second of four 4:00 pm games pits the New York Islanders and Kevin Poulin against the visiting Detroit Red Wings who are coming off a thrashing of the Boston Bruins. I sense a letdown for the Wings in this one as Jimmy Howard has lost 7 in a row. Howard is struggling a bit this year and while Poulin hasn't stepped it up ever since Nabokov went down with an injury, the Isles are in desperate need of a win after losing 4 straight and 9 of their last 11....Reto Berra and the Calgary Flames travel to Anaheim to take on Jonas Hiller (LIKELY) and the Ducks. Hiller tries to get back on the winning track against a Flames team the Ducks should easily handle....In a game pitting two Western Conference powerhouses against one another, Jaroslav Halak (LIKELY)and the St. Louis Blues take their gear to San Jose to take on the Sharks and Antti Niemi. The Sharks have won 3 in a row while and 6 of last 7 while the Blues have won 5 in a row as Halak has been improving his game in that streak, allowing only 4 regulation goals in 4 games during that streak.  This should be a great game to watch and I'm not crazy enough to select who may win this one....On to 5:00 pm (ET) where we will see a battle of the backups.  The Montreal Canadiens go with Peter Budaj,...

Goalie Start: Head coach Michel Therrien confirmed that Peter Budaj... dailyfaceoff.com Thu 11/28/13 2:56 PM

In 5 starts this season, Budaj has a .942 SV% and a 1.58 GAA. Budaj also held the Caps to 2 goals in his last time out.

Goalie Start: Budaj gets the call for Friday's game against Washing... dailyfaceoff.com Thu 11/21/13 2:56 PM

Budaj shut the door on 23 of 25 shots he faced last Friday against Columbus. Budaj has been strong when called upon this season. He is 3-1-0 with a 1.48 GAA and .945 SV% in four starts, all of which have come on the road - Montreal will be in Washington tomorrow. It is not a great spot start matchup for the Habs back-up.

THE GOALIE EDGE: 11/15/2013 primepucks.com Fri 11/15/13 1:23 PM

The New Jersey Devils turn to Cory Schneider in net as they face a Kings team coming off a tough-earned 3-2 comeback victory the night before against the Isles on the road. This is a tough spot for Los Angeles, who will start feeling the loss of franchise goalie Jonathan Quick sooner than later. Ben Scrivens (LIKELY) gets the start again. The Devils have been red-hot, winning 3 of the last four games.   Martin Brodeur has been the main beneficiary of the sudden winning streak, so look for Schneider to be plenty motivated in this one. We are hot for the Devs....  Will the Pittsburgh Penguins extend their losing streak to four tonight? Heck, no. The perfect remedy to such a losing streak is a date with a far more inept Nashville team and their over-matched backup to the backup goalie, Marek Mazanec. Marc-Andre Fleury wins easy for the Pens....Tim Thomas starts for the Florida Panthers but this is a revenge match for Josh Harding and company as the Wild lost to the Panthers their last time out. It won't happen again, as Harding will continue his masterful goaltending and further entrench himself as the Wild's No. 1 guy, ahead of the injured Niklas Backstrom....If you feel like "swinging for the fences", take the streaking Steve Mason and the suddenly dangerous Flyers on the road against Winnipeg. There could be a small letdown following their grueling victory at Pittsburgh, but Claude Giroux has been playing himself back into the conversation of elite NHL forwards. Take a chance on Mason.... Columbus, in the second of back-to-back games, will be facing a desperate Montreal club, who will be pumped for a win. Peter Budaj will be in goal for the Canadiens, but he has been razor sharp in spot duty. Bobrovsky played in last night's tilt against Boston so expect Curtis McElhinney (LIKELY) to get his 4th start of the season. Go Habs, go!....The Anaheim Ducks sent Frederik Andersen back to the AHL as Viktor Fasth (LIKELY) returns from the IR.  Fasth will be thrown into action immediately against the Carolina Hurricanes especially after last night's embarrassing 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.  With Justin Peters is in net for the Canes. Peters has won 3 of his last 4 all on home ice, so this could be another upset in the making.   Actually, this one can go either way depending on which of the two teams decides to show up....Braden Holtby and the Washington Capitals look to gain some momentum from their win over Columbus but playing Detroit on the road is no ...

Goalie Start: Budaj starts on Friday. dailyfaceoff.com Thu 11/14/13 2:56 PM

Budaj allowed three goals on 30 shots in a loss to the Avalanche on November 2. It was his first loss of the season, but he has posted a nice 1.34 GAA and .953 SV% in three starts. He gets a good matchup against the Blue Jackets Friday.

Goalie Start: Budaj starts on Saturday. dailyfaceoff.com Fri 11/1/13 7:56 PM

Budaj stopped all of the 27 shots that he faced in a shutout win over the Rangers on Monday. In two starts this year, Budaj is 2-0 with a 0.50 GAA and .982 SV%. If he continues to play this well, he will force the Habs to give him more starts. He has a tough test against the Avalanche tomorrow.

DAILY PRIME - OCTOBER 29, 2013: MOULSON GOLDEN, ALMOST + PRIME 100 ... primepucks.com Tue 10/29/13 8:35 AM

UPDATE: The PRIME 100 has been updated in the RANKINGS section! Newly acquired Matt Moulson didn't wait long to impress his new fan base as he scored twice in his Buffalo Sabres debut but it still wasn't enough as the visiting Dallas Stars dropped Ryan Miller's record to 1-9-0. With longtime Sabre Thomas Vanek being dealt, it is just a matter of time before the veteran netminder is dealt also. Moulson seemed to have formed instant chemistry with Tyler Ennis (2A), but again, it's only one game. It is a positive sign in a place where there haven't been many this season....The win raised Star's G Kari Lehtonen's record to 4-1-1 and is a solid 1B goalie when he stays healthy....Dallas D Alex Goligoski scored his first goal, and first point, of the season and has continued to be ahuge disappointment to fantasy hockey fans. That point ties him with another Dallas D-man, Sergei Gonchar who has just 1 assist on the season so far. Just think how much better the Stars would be if their defensemen could score. More Fantasy Game Notes: Marc-Andre Fleury and the Pittsburgh Penguins had a relatively easy time of beating the Hurricanes 3-1 in Carolina. Fleury stopped 20 of 21 SOG and raised his regular season record to 8-2-0.  Fantasy gold during the season, just find another for the playoffs....Don't go rushing to pick him up off the free-agent wire, but Pens D Brooks Orpik had a 3 assist game. The trio of Letang, Martin and Niskanen had zero points....In the "Ho-Hum Dept.", Sidney Crosby had 2 assists in the game....Peter Budaj and the Montreal Canadiens spoiled the long-awaited re-opening of Madison Square Garden and the return of the Rangers from their season-opening 9-game road trip as the Garden crowd saw their beloved Blueshirts get blanked 2-0. Budaj was spectacular when tested but without the services of Rick Nash and Ryan Callahan, the Rangers couldn't put one past the backup goaltender, who was starting only his second game of the season....The Blackhawks exacted their revenge on the Wild after being beaten 5-3 at home the other night by turning the tables and winning 5-1 on the road. Patrick Sharp opened the scoring with just his second of the season. Look for Sharp to heat up, so if you are in need of a goal scorer, perhaps you can get Sharp on the cheap before it's too late...Speaking of sharp, Corey Crawford turned away 29 of 30 SOG to raise his record to 6-2-2.... The Blackhawks scored 5 goals for the second time in their past 3 games, evidence that ...

Goalie Start: Peter Budaj starts for the Habs. dailyfaceoff.com Mon 10/28/13 2:56 PM

Budaj has only made one start this season, it was on October 10th against the Oilers. He stopped 27 of 28 shots in a win that day. He will face the Rangers tonight, who are playing in their home opener. He could make for a solid spot start tonight, New York is still battling serious injuries.

THE GOALIE EDGE: 10/28/2013 primepucks.com Mon 10/28/13 2:00 PM

ALL GOALIES CONFIRMED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED AT TIME OF PRINT The New York Rangers are finally getting to play a game at home after a season-openign 9 game road trip. The Blueshirts will also be getting back their star starting goalie in Henrik Lundqvist who sat out the past two games due to a minor lower body injury (LBI). The Rangers will be facing Peter Budaj, who is only making his second start of the season. They catch a break as Montreal plays back-to-back night as decied to rest Price an extra day.  Price has a .937 SP and a 2.12 GAA but is just 5-5-0 on the season.  Look for the offensively-starved Rangers to struggle in their first game back at the new and improved Madison Square Garden.  Rub the Budaj for an upset ....Nicklas Backstrom and the Minnesota Wild will look to make it a sweep against Corey Crawford and Chicago in their home-and-home series as the Blackhawks will look for revenge and also stop their modest 2-game losing streak. Expect Minnesota to extend their winning streak to 4....With only 1 win of the team's total of 2, it would be difficult to pick Ryan Miller over any team right now. Plus, his mind may be elsewhere since Thomas Vanek was traded yesterday, leaving Miller as one of the last the last viable pieces that the team can trade and get a bounty back for.  Kari Lehtonen starts for the Dallas Stars. The long, cold winter has started earlier than usual this year in Buffalo....Justin Peters is getting his third straight tough start for the Carolina Hurricanes as he is up against Marc-Andre Fleury (LIKELY) and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The last two starts were against Minnesota and Colorado on the road.  The Canes only hope is that Fleury reverts to his playoff type performance, but that is unlikely as he has been playing lights out this year although he did give up 4 goals against Toronto in his last start.  Go with Fleury....The late game pits Braden Holtby (LIKELY) and the Caps against Roberto Luongo (LIKELY) and the Canucks. Vancouver returns after a 7-game road trip while Washington is in the midst of a 5-game trip.  Holtby has been hot-and-cold while Luongo has been steady.  Go, go Roberto! FANTASY MUST-STARTS Roberto Luongo, Vancouver vs. Washington   Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh @ Carolina Kari Lehtonen, Dallas @ Buffalo SLEEPER ALERT Peter Budaj, Montreal @ New York DAILY GOALIE PICKS Steve (13-12) Marc-Andre Fleury Ray (11-14) Marc-Andre Fleury Mike (12-12) Marc-Andre Fleury
