There has been some progress in the contract talks between Marner and the Maple Leafs, reports Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.ca. The winger was not with the team as it opened training camp Friday.
EDGE Analysis
No specifics were provided, but Thursday's ultimatum from the team that it would no longer provide any updates on the contract impasse clearly put the pressure square on Marner's camp. The young winger, who is from the Toronto area, loves playing for the Leafs, but has faced growing criticism in social media from fans that perceive him to be greedy. The Maple Leafs opened camp Friday and it would be good for all parties for Marner to sign and get there quickly. It becomes more and more challenging for any player to get up to game speed the longer they are absent from camp. It remains to be seen if there will be compromises on dollars, term or both, but this is good news for all, including fantasy owners that are preparing to bank on this young stud as a team pillar.

Marner was not listed on the Leafs' roster when training camp opened Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Marner's contract impasse has officially hit holdout status with the two sides still unable to reach a deal. The winger's camp is reportedly seeking a short-term deal after turning down offers of seven or eight years with upward of an $11 million AAV. A bridge deal would allow Marner to capitalize on expected revenue increases sooner than teammate Auston Matthews, who is locked in through 2023-24. Maple Leafs' fans will no doubt be having flashbacks to last season's protracted contract dispute with William Nylander. For fantasy owners, Marner's 94-point 2018-19 campaign makes him an elite fantasy option, despite lingering concerns regarding his availability for Opening Night versus Ottawa on Oct. 2.

The Leafs are optimistic Marner will be signed and in camp when it opens, reports TSN.ca.
EDGE Analysis
Leaf's general manager Kyle Dubas said the team has continued to have dialogue with Marner's agent as recently as last week. "I don't think we want anybody to miss any day or training camp, period," said Dubas. "So we'll continue to work towards that and remain hopeful." Marner is among several restricted free agents around the NHL that remain without a contract ten days before camps open.

Marner's camp has had discussions with the ZSC Lions of the NLA about a potential contract for the 2019-20 campaign, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
EDGE Analysis
This is almost certainly just a negotiating tactic, as there's next to no chance that Marner actually ends up signing a contract with the Lions, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him head to Switzerland to train with the team in early September if he still hasn't reached a deal with the Maple Leafs prior to training camp. Either way, it's certainly worth noting that at this point it appears that Marner's holdout could end up extending into the regular season.

Marner has talked to several teams about a possible offer sheet, reports Aaron Portzline of The Athletic. The list includes Columbus.
EDGE Analysis
Marner has made the rounds with several teams -- who wouldn't when given the chance? But he seems to remain committed to the Leafs who would probably match any offer anyway. The Leafs seem to be digging in, looking for a longer term, and Marner's camp is using Auston Matthews massive five-year deal as a benchmark. This could go on for a while.

Marner was given a qualifying offer by the Leafs on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
This news was expected, considering the Maple Leafs didn't want to lose Marner for nothing once July 1 hits. Marner and the team are expected to begin tense contract negotiations once he becomes a free agent. There are rumors that Marner wants at least $11 million per season and likely a five-year term like Auston Matthews, but the Leafs would love to sign the winger on a deal for about $9.5 million. No matter which team Marner suits up for in 2019-20, he'll certainly be a hot commodity in the fantasy realm.

Marner's contract negotiations with Toronto could be contentious, reports Darren Dreger of TSN.ca. He may test the market before signing an extension with Toronto.
EDGE Analysis
Dreger boldly stated he could see Marner's camp extending talks with the Leafs past July 1, the date he officially becomes an RFA. And Dreger went on to say he wouldn't be surprised if Marner starts visiting other teams starting June 26 during the RFA offer sheet interview period. There are rumors that Marner wants at least $11 million per season and likely a five-year term like Auston Matthews. The Leafs would love to get the slick winger on a deal for $9.5 million. Marner drives a lot of offense and was the heart-and-soul of the Buds this season. But wingers don't get the big numbers that pivots earn. This is going to be an interesting five-week period.

Marner's contract extension is the Leafs' "priority one" going forward, says Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas.
EDGE Analysis
In the Leafs' season-ending news conference, Dubas was honest and took responsibility for the team's ouster in the postseason. He also acknowledged that he waited too long to start contract negotiations with free agents last year. He won't make that mistake again. Marner is a leader on and off the ice, and has shown he is a star in three short years in the NHL. Dubas wants him signed before July 1, thus eliminating any offer sheets for the restricted free agent. Marner has made no secret that he wants to play in Toronto, so this will get done. It just comes down to the almighty dollar.

Marner posted an assist in Monday's 3-2 win over Boston in Game 3 of the best-of-seven series.
EDGE Analysis
The slick forward was credited with the secondary assist on Auston Matthews' power-play marker, part of a five-goal second period. In addition to the assist, Marner had a huge block at the end of regulation, preventing a hard shot off the stick of David Pastrnak from getting to the net as time expired. Marner now has three points this postseason, in as many games.

Marner scored a pair of goals -- one coming on a penalty shot -- in Thursday's 4-1 Game 1 victory over Boston.
EDGE Analysis
Marner drew the game's only penalty shot with Toronto down a man, and the Maple Leafs forward didn't let it go to waste, undressing Tuukka Rask with a deke before depositing the puck in an open net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Toronto would add two more goals and take Game 1 in convincing fashion. Considering Marner averaged more than a point a game against Boston during the regular season, putting up five points in four games, the shifty forward is likely to find the scoresheet often in this series. Game 2 comes Saturday.
