Acquired from the Avalanche late last week, Rantanen collected his first point as a member of the Hurricanes in his second game for his new squad, flipping a pass to Andrei Svechnikov past a sprawling Igor Shesterkin for an easy tap-in late in the second period. Rantanen appears to be developing chemistry with his new teammates quickly, and even though he's no longer skating with Nathan MacKinnon, the 28-year-old still figures to thrive as one of the focal points of the Carolina offense. Through 51 appearances this season, Rantanen has 25 goals and 65 points.

Rantanen was traded to the Hurricanes from the Avalanche via the Blackhawks in a three-way deal Friday, Emily Kaplan of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

Rantanen is the biggest player in the trade, but it's a blockbuster on multiple levels. The pending unrestricted free agent goes from riding alongside Nathan MacKinnon in Colorado to a spot alongside countryman Sebastian Aho in Carolina. Chicago was involved in the trade to retain 50 percent of Rantanen's cap hit to make the money work for the Hurricanes. Additional aspects of the trade will see Taylor Hall join Rantanen in Carolina, while Martin Necas and Jack Drury head to Colorado. The Blackhawks will also get their own third-round pick in 2025 back after dealing it away in a previous trade, while the Avalanche will get a second-round pick in 2025 and a fourth-round pick in 2026, per Kaplan.

Rantanen produced an assist and four shots on goal in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Jets.

Rantanen set up a Cale Makar tally in the third period, which ultimately forced overtime. The 28-year-old Rantanen has gone six games without a goal but still has four assists in that span to remain moderately productive. He was back on the top line Wednesday, which is a good sign for his productivity moving forward. Rantanen has 25 goals, 39 helpers, 135 shots on net, 28 PIM, 27 hits and a plus-12 rating over 49 outings.

He took a turn as the second-line center Thursday, a move the Avalanche haven't used often this season. It's possible he'll be in that spot for a while given Casey Mittelstadt's ongoing struggles. Rantanen is at 25 goals, 37 assists, 127 shots on net and a plus-10 rating over 46 appearances. In any usage, Rantanen figures to see top-six minutes and plenty of power-play time.

The 28-year-old Rantanen saw a 14-game point streak (nine goals, 14 helpers) end in Chicago on Wednesday, but has been held off the scoresheet in consecutive contests just once this year. That consistency has helped him reach the 60-point mark (25 goals, 35 assists) while adding 120 shots on net and a plus-13 rating through 43 outings this season.

Rantanen scored an empty-net goal on three shots in Monday's 3-1 win over the Panthers.

Rantanen put the finishing touches on the win and extended his scoring streaks in the process. He has a goal in five straight games -- three of which have been empty-netters -- and he's earned nine goals and 14 assists during a 14-game point streak that started Dec. 7. The 28-year-old winger is up to 24 tallies, 58 points (18 on the power play), 117 shots on net and a plus-10 rating through 41 outings overall, putting him on pace for a career year and his third consecutive 100-point campaign.

Rantanen scored a power-play goal on seven shots and had a block in Saturday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Canadiens.

Rantanen was left unattended near the post and redirected a feed from Nathan MacKinnon to put Colorado up, 1-0, nine minutes into the game. It was his fourth consecutive game with a goal and second straight with a power-play tally. Rantanen leads the Avalanche in both goals (23) and power-play markers (eight). The seven shots on net give him 123 for the season.

Even though Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar earn most of the praise for their impressive season, it's impossible to overlook what Rantanen has been doing for the Avs. His current point streak has reached 12 games following this impressive outing, and he's tallied 21 points over that stretch, putting up seven goals and 14 helpers. On the season, Rantanen is up to 56 points in 39 games (22 goals, 34 assists) and shouldn't have problems reaching the 100-point plateau for a third straight campaign. He forms one of the league's most dynamic offensive duos with MacKinnon.
