That the goal lacked hockey art was typical of Pezzetta's play since the Habs called him up last November. It was his fifth goal of the season and first since Jan. 20, a span of 19 games which includes seven healthy scratches. The seven hits gives the fourth-line grinder 106 checks over 37 games while averaging 7:46 TOI.

Pezzetta had two shots over 5:40 of ice time in Thursday's 5-4 overtime victory in Calgary.

Pezzetta returned to the lineup after a one-game healthy scratch, serving as a fourth-line winger while Mathieu Perreault took a seat in the press box. Pezzetta's value is in the energy he brings nightly, but the career minor-leaguer is not much of a fantasy asset if he's not doling out body checks. He entered the game with 17 hits over his last five games and is fifth on the team with 97 over 35 games while averaging a mere 7:52 TOI.

Pezzetta had one shot and four hits over 9:19 of ice time in Sunday's 3-2 shootout win over the Islanders.

EDGE Analysis

Pezzetta, who had been a healthy scratch for the five games since Montreal returned from the All-Star break, was back in the lineup with Joel Armia (face) unavailable. The fourth-line winger relished the role by logging another four hits, giving him 87 thumps over 31 games, but he also figured prominently in Montreal's first goal. He worked behind the New York goal to free a puck, then positioned himself in front of Ilya Sorokin while occupying a defenseman, which enabled Jeff Petry's shot from the point that got past the goalie. It's exactly the type of sequence the career minor-leaguer needs to show coaches if he wants to stay out of the AHL.

Pezzetta racked up 17 penalty minutes in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Oilers.

Pezzetta, who has embraced the scrapper role on the Canadiens, got into it with Zack Kassian late in the third period. Kassian had run goalie Samuel Montembeault in the second period without consequence from the Habs at that time. Pezzetta wanted Kassian to pay for it and was assessed a fighting major along with two minutes as instigator and a game misconduct. The career minor leaguer has 31 PIM over the last three games and easily leads Montreal with 68 minutes in the box, nearly twice as much as the next Hab, Josh Anderson (37 PIM). It's unclear if Pezzetta will be active when Montreal is expected to add Brendan Gallagher (lower body) and Paul Byron (hip) to the lineup Sunday against Columbus. What is certain is if the Canadiens continue to submit lackluster efforts, as they did Saturday, there will be plenty of opportunities for Pezzetta to "ignite" the troops with a well-time skirmish.

Pezzetta added four hits and 14 PIM in a 8-2 loss to the Wild on Monday.

Pezzetta could not help Montreal catch up to the Wild in this one, but he did at least make sure Minnesota's players would be feeling it the next morning. The rookie right winger had three goals in his previous five games, though he only had one goal in the other 21.

Pezzetta has scored in three of his last four games despite not logging more than 12:13 of ice time in an appearance this season. The more he scores, the stronger case he makes to remain in the lineup even once the Canadiens get some forward back from injured reserve and the COVID-19 protocols.
