Aulie will audition for a role on the Coyotes' third defensive pair or as a seventh defenseman during training camp, with his roster spot likely being dictated by how well younger options like Klas Dahlbeck, Connor Murphy, and Brandon Gormley perform in training camp. The 26-year-old had difficulty earning ice time on an Oilers squad short on quality defenders last season, skating in only 31 games and providing just one point.

Aulie wasn't extended a qualifying offer Monday by the Oilers and will become an unrestricted free agent, Jason Gregor of the Edmonton Journal reports. After signing with the Oilers last summer, Aulie ended up only appearing in 31 games, as the coaching staff typically opted to make him a healthy scratch. The fact that Aulie struggled to see the ice on one of the league's poorest defensive units doesn't bode well for his chances of earning a meaningful role with any other team.

Aulie has cleared waivers, according to the Oilers web site. The Oilers will likely wait until after the carnage of Monday's trade deadline before decided where Aulie should report to.

The 25-year-old will thus be forced to sit Friday and Sunday before becoming eligible to return Tuesday against Detroit. Aulie has yet to score in 13 games with Edmonton this season, but he has logged 49 penalty minutes.

The Oilers recalled Aulie from AHL Oklahoma City on Monday, Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun reports. Aulie is expected to take Andrew Ference's place in the lineup, since Ference has been suspended for three games.

Aulie will begin the season in Oklahoma City of the AHL, according to the Edmonton Journal. This is a little bit of a head scratcher as the Oilers signed Aulie as a free agent during the offseason. Aulie also has a one-way contract which should tell you all you need to know about how bad he had to play this preseason in order not to make the team.
