With Gabriel Landeskog (knee) and Nathan MacKinnon (upper body) out until early January, Compher is expected to remain in a top-six role for a few more weeks.

Compher stepped up his production while Colorado navigated several injuries to its forwards. He has three goals and five assists while averaging 23:05 TOI over the last eight games. He's also been good at the dot, winning nearly 55 percent of his draws, including 71 percent in Thursday's loss to the Sabres. With some of the injured personnel returning to the ice, it looks like head coach Jared Bednar is looking to fill out the scoring among the top two lines. As such, Valeri Nichushkin slipped down to the second line at practice, leaving Compher to skate with Finnish wingers Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen.

This was Compher's third multi-point effort in the last 10 games, a span in which he has three goals and seven assists. For the season, the 27-year-old is up to four tallies, 16 points, 39 shots, 24 blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating in 27 appearances. He'll likely continue to be leaned on heavily as the Avalanche navigate a brutal stretch of injuries to key forwards.

Compher had an assist, three shots on goal, one hit and one blocked shot over a forward-high 25:34 of ice time in Monday's 5-3 loss to Philadelphia.

The injured Avalanche suffered another one during the game; Nathan MacKinnon left with an upper-body injury midway through the first period. That opened up a spot on the top line, which Compher filled. He'll continue in a top-six role if some the injured don't return in time for Wednesday's home game against the Bruins. The composition of the lines heading into Wednesday is up in the air. Colorado placed both Alex Galchenyuk and Jayson Megna on waivers -- oddly enough, each was in the lineup Monday while officially being on waivers -- which suggests Valeri Nichushkin (ankle), Artturi Lehkonen (upper body) or Jean-Luc Foudy (lower body) could be set to return.
