THE GOALIE EDGE- 10/7/13
With only two games on the schedule, a light start to the week. New Jersey travels to Edmonton and it will be Martin Brodeur in net for the Devils. Brodeur has done well in Edmonton in the past and should continue those winning ways....The LA Kings host the New York Rangers who will only be playing their seocnd game of the young season. Captain Ryan Callahan should be back in the lineup and his presence is needed. Henrik Lundqvist will most likely battle against Jonathan Quick, pitting two top fantasy goalies against one another. I'm giving the nod to the home team in this one. Sometimes these matches turn into barn burners when everyone is expecting a pitcher's duel.
FANTASY MUST STARTS:
Martin Brodeur, New Jersey vs. Edmonton
DAILY GOALIE PICKS & RECORDS
Steve: Jonathan Quick (1-5)
Ray: Martin Brodeur (3-3)
Mike: Jonathan Quick (3-2)
Goalie Start: Jonathan Quick will start in goal for the Kings. dailyfaceoff.com Fri 10/4/13 7:56 PM
Quick started the season strong, allowing just two goals on 29 shots in a shootout win over the Minnesota Wild last night. One of the goals looked like it was kicked in by Matt Cooke, but after review it was ruled a good goal. He will be back between the pipes tonight against a Jets team that scored five on Devan Dubnyk. Quick is a must-start regardless of matchups.

UPDATE: Minnesota signed RW Jason Pominville to a 5-year contract extension. If I were playing on a line with Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise, I'd sign on the dotted line too. After seeing his former team, the Buffalo Sabres, play last night against Detroit, he may be happier than ever with a new contract....Boston signs solid D-man Dennis Seidenberg to a 4-year extension....ALL UPDATED IN THE GUIDE ALREADY!!!
THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED--With the Detroit Red Wings moving into the Eastern Conference, people have been saying how the competition is tougher in the East. I say that the perennial powerhouse Red Wings will benefit from not having to travel across multiple time zones so many times across a full NHL season just to play a game. All that travel takes its toll on one's body and mental toughness. You could reasonably expect better than average numbers from the Detroit players this season because of this factor, and you will probably notice the difference in their level of play as the season progresses. Detroit finished in the middle of the pack last season in terms of Power Play ranking. By the looks of last night's game, they are gunning for the top spot in that category as they sported a 1st power play unit of Daniel Alfredsson and Niklas Kronwall at the points with Johan Franzen, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk rounding out the unit. Although they were held off the board in last night's game, this group looks lethal.
More Game Notes: NEW SEASON, NEW PLAYERS, NEW BEGINNINGS--New acquisition G Jonathan Bernier looked very solid in net for the Toronto Maple Leafs as he turned away 31 of 32 shots on goal to earn the road victory against Steve Mason and the Philadelphia Flyers. Bernier has stepped out from behind Jonathan Quick's shadow in Los Angeles and now battles James Reimer for playing time in TO. Bernier raised the bar with last night's solid effort. Mason, who was acquired at the trade deadline last season, and Bernier are trying to prove to their teams that ...

Goalie Start: Quick will start for the Kings. dailyfaceoff.com Thu 10/3/13 7:56 PM
Quick was a disappointment in the shortened season going 18-13-4 with a 2.45 GAA and .902 SV%. He shared the crease with Jonathan Bernier, who is in Toronto. Quick is going to start 65 games and is a great candidate for 35 wins in 2013-14.

Along with the 2 goals, he took 3 SOG and had 2 Hits and 1 Blocked Shot. In the opener against Montreal, he didn't get on the score sheet, but was involved throughout the game with 2 SOG, 1 BS and 4 Hits. NHL IN 30-2013/14: LOS ANGELES KINGS primepucks.com Sun 9/29/13 10:50 AM
The Gretzky Era ended in Los Angeles when the Kings traded the Great One to the St. Louis Blues in 1995-1996 and you would think the team would flounder without the presence of Gretzky in the lineup. The Kings however were able to qualify for the playoffs in 4 of the next six season but without much success; losing in the 1st or 2nd round. The Kings went on to miss the playoffs for the next 3 years and prompted management to hire Dean Lombardi in April of 2006 to right the ship. And right the ship he did! Even though the team missed the playoffs in his first 3 years as GM, he was building a Championship caliber team in Tinseltown. In 2009-2010 the Kings returned to the playoffs but lost in the 1st round and repeated the same results the following season. In 2011-2012, with more than half a season left, Darryl Sutter was brought in to coach and the Kings barely eked into the playoffs but went on such a tremendous run through the playoffs capturing their 1st Stanley Cup. Their efforts to repeat were thwarted by the current Stanley Cup Champions Chicago Blackhawks, but we can see them returning for another chance to raise the Cup.
Goalie
When you start with the perhaps one of the top 3 goaltenders in the NHL, your chances of getting to the Stanley Cup finals are greater than most teams. Your odds increase when that goalie is none other than Conn Smythe trophy winner Jonathan Quick. Quick was hampered by injuries early last season but should return to form for the current year. Although they traded away Jonathan Bernier, they did receive back Ben Scrivens in that deal and he is more than a capable backup, although he is no Bernier. Expect Quick to get majority of the starts and should post better than average stats. You can do no wrong with building your fantasy team around Quick.
Defense
The blue line begins with Drew Doughty but there is a new star-in-the-making coming up quickly. Ever since his sophomore season where he scored 59 points in a full season, high expectations have been put upon his shoulders by fantasy poolies but he has never come close to that level since. He did have 40 and 36 point seasons following that career year, but that is about all you can expect from DD. Slava Voynov is entering his 3rd NHL season and after a somewhat breakout year in the Lockout season with 25 points in 48 games, he turned it up in the playoffs with a 6-7-13 performance in 18 games. Look for Voynov to continue that trend. With injuries on the back end...
Goalie Start: Quick will start the must-win Game 5. dailyfaceoff.com Sat 6/8/13 7:56 PM
Quick allowed three goals on 28 shots in Thursday's Game 4 loss. The Kings lost the the game 3-2 and now trail the Hawks 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. They will turn to last year's Conn Smythe winner to give them a big performance tonight so they can stay alive in the NHL playoffs.
Goalie Start: Quick is first off the ice. dailyfaceoff.com Thu 6/6/13 7:56 PM
LA looks to tie up the series with a second win on home ice. Quick has allowed 7 goals in 3 starts in the series.
