Joe Thornton scored twice -- including the overtime game-winner -- for the Sharks as they topped the Wild 3-2 on Saturday night. Fresh off his brand new three-year extension, Thornton did something he's not really known for at this point in his career. Thornton continues to be a big point producer, but he's been one of the league's best distributors and not goal scorers. He now has eight goals this season, to go along with 47 assists. Patrick Marleau, also in his first game since his new three-year extension, scored his 22nd. Matt Irwin had two helpers, while Tommy Wingels and Joe Pavelski each got one.

The San Jose Sharks have agreed to a three-year, $20.25 million extension with Joe Thornton. Like Patrick Marleau, Thornton almost certainly left some money on the table. Thornton will turn 35 years old before this contract kicks in, but he's also a player taking a slight pay cut despite the fact that he has 53 points in 50 games this season. With Marleau and Thornton taking hometown discounts, the Sharks now have 18 players under contract for just under $60 million in cap room for the 2014-15 campaign. With the cap projected to be $71.1 million, that gives the Sharks plenty of breathing room to continue to tweak and improve their team.

Joe Thornton failed to make Team Canada. That's very surprising given that Thornton is one of the league's top playmakers and has been for basically his entire career. He's having another superb season with five goals and 48 points in 43 games. He's tied for third among Canadians in the NHL's scoring race.

Joe Thornton is good to play on Tuesday despite his right eye being swollen after being struck by the puck on Saturday. "It feels fine. [Monday], I still had some problems seeing, but today it feels back to 100 percent," Thornton said. Sharks coach Todd McLellan said he was trusting Thornton and his trainer when they say he's good to play. Thornton is on a five-game point streak.

Joe Thornton was cut in the first period near his eye but returned to play after getting stitched up on Saturday. Thornton played with one eye half-closed but still managed to set up Patrick Marleau for his 25th assist of the season. It was a shorthanded effort. Thornton has only four goals but his 29 points place him tied for eighth place in NHL scoring.
