Vesey (undisclosed) left Thursday's game against the Rangers and won't return, John Vogl of The Athletic reports.

Vesey was on the wrong end of a Brady Skjei hit in the second period, and as evidenced by this news, seems to be feeling the effects of the hit. The former Ranger was forced to miss the last 12:35 of the second period due to the hit. With the 26-year-old missing, the Sabres will operate with 11 forwards, with Zemgus Girgensons the likely player to get a bump up to the third line.

Vesey recorded an assist in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Sharks.

It was the only digit on the winger's stat line. Vesey's helper came on a Casey Mittelstadt goal in the second period. The 26-year-old has two assists and a plus-4 rating in nine games this season, as he slowly adjusts to a third-line role with the Sabres.

Vesey picked up an assist and went plus-2 in Thursday's 3-0 win over the Kings.

The drought has ended for Vesey, who came up empty in seven straight games to open the season. The 26-year-old produced 35 points in 81 games for the Rangers last season, but he could struggle to match that mark in his first year with the Sabres if his offense remains inconsistent.

An offseason acquisition, Vesey was brought in to provide more scoring depth to Buffalo. That hasn't been the case yet, as he has no points and just eight shots in his seven outings as a Sabre. After scoring 35 points last year with the Rangers, he will need to go on a hot streak if he's to match those numbers. He's playing a career-low 12:21 of ice time per game, so don't expect much production right away.

Perhaps this trade foreshadows a bigger move coming from the Rangers, as it clears out $2.275 million in cap space just hours before free agency opens up. As for the Sabres, they're getting a solid depth forward, as Vesey has potted 50 goals over three seasons since signing with the Rangers out of Harvard. The Sabres previously wanted Vesey badly enough that they traded a third-round pick for him back in 2016 following his excellent college career and Hobey Baker Award, just to acquire his rights. Even though he ultimately signed with the Rangers, the Sabres now finally get their guy.

Vesey finished the season with 17 goals and 35 points in 81 games.

EDGE Analysis

Vesey has improved with every season, but his growth has come at a snail's pace. He's now scored 16, 17 and 17 goals in his first three seasons, as well as 27, 28 and 35 points. The 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner as the nation's best collegiate player is just another guy at the NHL level. There's no shame in that, but Vesey's impact will probably remain limited to deeper formats.

Vesey mustered one shot in 17:23 of ice time during Sunday's 3-0 win over the Flyers.

EDGE Analysis

This was a fitting ending to a quiet March that saw Vesey record just a single goal without an assist in 15 games. Still in a top-six role, he'll try to turn things around in the month of April, during which the Rangers will have four games to close out the season.

It was the third straight multipoint game for Vesey, which is no doubt partially due to the fact that he is logging 20:34 of ice time per game in those outings, over four minutes higher than his season average 16:10.The winger seems to be settling in nicely in the post Mats Zuccarello era and figures to continue see more play time on the first line the rest of the season.

That's back-to-back two-point efforts for Vesey since Mats Zuccarello got deal to Dallas, a trade that created an opening for the 25-year-old winger on the Rangers' No. 1 line. He won't keep up that pace, but Vesey could still have surprising fantasy value down the stretch if he continues to show chemistry with Mika Zibanejad and can hang onto his new assignment.

Vesey isn't going to be a star scorer in the NHL, but he is in uncharted territory. He set a new career mark in points Saturday -- he now has 30 points in 60 games and could even deliver 40 if the rest of the season goes well. That means Vesey brings value in deeper formats, so deploy accordingly. Just don't overrate from a keeper perspective.
