Jason LaBarbera turned aside 23 shots in the Coyotes' 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators Thursday night. The goaltending situation for 2011-12 in the desert is still unclear as the team basically has two second string caliber netminders battling for the starters job. LaBarbera inked a two-year contract extension with the Coyotes this summer and will battle newly acquired Mike Smith for the starting gig in Phoenix. LaBarbera will get his starts this season, but unless he does something special in those games, he'll be riding the bench in what will surely be a very long season in Glendale.

Jason LaBarbera will get the start in goal for Phoenix Thursday. The Coyotes will give LaBarbera the net for the entire game against the Flames. LaBarbera is in a battle with Mike Smith for the starting job in Phoenix, but look for Smith to start the season as the number one goalie. LaBarbera's value is limited at best, but could be used as a handcuff to Smith in deep pools.

Jason LaBarbera will get the start in goal for Phoenix on Saturday. The Coyotes are in San Jose for the exhibition game and it appears that LaBarbera will play the whole game with Curtis McElhinney sitting on the bench as his backup. Mike Smith, who LaBarbera is battling for the top job will not make the road trip. We think that Smith will start 50-55 games this season barring injury, while LaBarbera will play in the remainder. Smith will be a good third goalie option in deeper drafts while LaBarbera is a supplemental pick at best.

Jason LaBarbera expects a spirited battle with Mike Smith throughout training camp for the number one gig in Phoenix. The goaltending situation for 2011-12 in the desert is still unclear as the team basically has two second string caliber netminders battling for the starters job. LaBarbera inked a two-year contract extension with the Coyotes this summer and will battle newly acquired Mike Smith for the starting job in Phoenix.
