In fact, it's his first multi-point game since February of last year, but he has collected his third goal of the season, already matching last year's total. Now with just eight points through 40 games, Gardiner has obviously been a huge fantasy bust this season. To make matters worse, his minus-20 rating is fifth-worst in the NHL among defensemen. If you have been hanging onto Gardiner in the hopes of a career resurgence in Raleigh, it doesn't look to be coming anytime soon.

Gardiner currently has the fifth-worst plus-minus rating among NHL defensemen with a minus-17.

To put it mildly, Gardiner simply can't be trusted in his own zone. This partially explains why his average ice time has dropped by five minutes per game compared to last year (16:07 vs. 21:13), which is what happens when you are no longer a top-four blueliner. Not surprisingly, Gardiner's scoring totals are also on the decline. Now with just eight points in 34 games, he'll be lucky to hit 20 points at this rate. He does not deserve to be in your fantasy lineup right now.

What a rapid decline it's been for the former Maple Leaf, who scored a career-high 52 points just two seasons ago. Now with just six points on the season and an ugly minus-17 rating, his fantasy value is hovering dangerously close to zero. Bench him immediately or drop him outright if you have better options.

Gardiner skated just 12:48 in Thursday's 5-4 overtime win against the Sabres. He finished the game with zero points, two shots on goal and a minus-3 rating.

EDGE Analysis

This is not a good sign for anyone who thought Gardiner would be a top-four blueliner with the Hurricanes this season. After averaging almost 18 minutes in ice time over his first 14 games, Gardiner has since been bumped to the bottom pairing, where he's averaged just 14:26 in the past two games. Offensively, he now has just six points in 19 games this season and is not in a prime position to add to that total given his current assignment. You are better off benching him for the time being.
