The NHL has the ability to cancel the Winter Classic between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings at Michigan Stadium on the date of the game, Jan. 1, if there's a lockout, according to the New York Times.
The league would forfeit only $100,000 of its $3 million stadium rental fee. In part, the contract states that the league can pull out of the game if there's a work stoppage "arising from the lack of a collective bargaining agreement." The Times states, "The N.H.L.'s contract with Michigan contains provisions that treat a work stoppage in a way similar to a 'force majeure' cancellation brought about by act of God, riot, weather, disaster or any other cause beyond the league's control." The deal does not cover the outdoor games played that week at Comerica Park, which includes the alumni games between the Wings and Leafs, however.
