The Detroit Red Wings offered Daniel Cleary significantly less in July than the three-year/$8.25 million deal that he will reportedly sign with the Philadelphia Flyers. Cleary's contract with Philadelphia isn't official and that isn't expected to change until the end of the month. Either way, Detroit offered Cleary a little under $2 million annually for a three-year deal and an alternative that would have paid him a little more per season, but with a shorter term. Both proposals were made in July, before Detroit signed Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss. They were still willing invite Cleary to their training camp on a tryout basis, but he turned them down. "I'm a big Dan Cleary fan," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said. "I think he really grew into a real solid NHL player in Detroit. He was a good leader. We tried to re-sign him."
