The Blue Jackets are trying to figure out what to do with Marian Gaborik.
Gaborik might have been available for a trade Friday or today had he not been injured. He suffered a broken collarbone on Dec. 21, and the bone is still knitting. Word came on Thursday that he would not be able to play for Slovakia at the Olympics in Sochi. Gaborik is in the final year of his contract. At $7.5 million, he is the Blue Jackets' highest-paid player and, arguably, their most talented. Yet they have surged since he was injured. What a strange situation. The Jackets can try to trade him by the deadline, but they will not get much in return because he really hasn't done anything for two years. They can keep him for their playoff push and hope he returns to form. They can pitch a low-base, incentive-laden contract offer after the season. They can let him go for nothing. "We'll discuss this, as a front office, before the Olympics are over," club president John Davidson said. "We'll try to figure it out. Gabby wants to stay here - he told us that."
