Schmidt was reassigned to AHL Hershey on Saturday. The 23-year-old had become a more frequent healthy scratch of late for the Capitals, so the motivation to demote him likely stems from the organizational brass' desire to get him more ice time. Steven Oleksy was recalled from Hershey in a corresponding move, and is likely to fill the seventh defenseman role that had previously gone to Schmidt.
