R.J. Umberger opened up about how long he was battling through injuries.
As previously reported, Umberger had a separated shoulder, herniated disc, and broken finger. Umberger apparently started playing through the broken finger in early March, not aware that there was a break. It's only when the pain wasn't going away that they finally had a second X-Ray, which revealed a hairline fracture. His back problems were consistent throughout the season and got worse after the Olympic break. An MRI revealed a herniated disc, but it wasn't knocked out of the lineup until he separated his shoulder. Umberger missed the last four seasons as a result of that injury, but still managed to play in four of the Penguins' six postseason contests. He had 18 goals and 34 points in 74 contests in 2013-14.
