Redmond, who signed as a free agent, has been good enough during the preseason to move ahead of Mark Barberio, who was released by the Canadiens on Wednesday. Redmond is battling for the seventh and final spot on defense with 2015 first-round pick Mikhail Sergachev. If the Habs decide to have the 18-year-old Sergachev go back to the juniors, Redmond will be on the opening-night roster.
